What our customers say about their holidays
Fiona - Verified booking
The property was ideally situated but be aware it is on a hill (fine for us) Very dissapointed, the approach to the property was un Kempt and weeds approaching the property.
The garden grass was about 8 inches high, over grown and should have been cut and tidied there was no excuse for that as a holiday rental other than poor management. The property it's self needed a through DEEP clean....dirty, kitchen cupboards didn't shut properly, broken shelves in the fridges. The furniture and carpets in the front room need changing and up grading! setee seriously stained so it the carpet and rug.... (Fortunatly I took my own throws) other wise I certainly wouldn't want to have sat on it. There is also damp coming through the wall of the front bedroom. Stairs are steep, NO baby gate provided however we did ask and were declined. We also asked to take our own to be told it the pressure caused any damage we would be liable.....absolute joke considering this is not a highly maintained property. There was no concern regarding safty of a toddler! It was nice to have the table tennis in the garage. They also lost console games however the wired to these also need replacing, This property needs care and attention and bringing up to a higher cleaner standard and maintenance issues need addressing also the damp in the bedroom. The garden should have also been kept clean and tidy, This property is neglected which is such a shame Next door is a rental too and unfortunatly the owners adult children liked to party till 03.00 am dispite asking to be quiet!

Lovely house, great location.
For us with a family of 6 adults and a 3 year old there was plenty of room downstairs. We loved the kitchen diner and garden were fabulous and well equipped. Things that could use improvement were; The twin bedroom at the top of the house had no storage for clothes etc which was very inconvenient and we had to use the drawers in the bunk room and wardrobe in the main bedroom in the lower floor. The rope hand rail leading up to the top floor came apart at both ends in my hand which could have been serious but luckily wasnât is was dangerous and requires immediate attention because this has obviously happened before. There were several signs of attempts to repair with black tape. The remote controls for the TV in the living room didnât work and on further investigation we found corroded batteries in all 3. There were new batteries provided but not the right size. It would have been really nice to have had a welcome pack containing tea, biscuits and especially milk, just to give us time before heading to the supermarket. Itâs a nice touch that we have appreciated in other holiday rentals and the welcome guide needs refreshing and updating, however the laminated instruction signs placed in strategic points were very helpful. Thank you itâs a nice house.

We have stayed at the house 3 times and love it.
It is great to see work done on it each year, e.g. bathroom and paint outside. However a few things to note which I hope will be of benefit and some perhaps worth passing onto owner: -The top bedroom in roof can get seriously very hot in warm weather as there is no airflow (we brought a fan this year to help). This can be improved two ways; (1) fit an opening window behind bath (the current window doesn't open and double glazing has blown so likely needs replacing in due course), (2) the blocked up window behind wardrobe is painted black outside and this acts as massive heat soak (wall gets very hot)! Could it be painted another colour? -The lawn was not cut for a good few weeks (same last year), would have been nice since we have young children -Master bedroom on 1st floor has some large cracks in wall and could do coat of paint -Rear downstairs lounge has several areas were plaster/paint is failing and could do with repair (might be damp?) -Twin room has some broken bed slats. The frames were also very loose (I tightened some with allen keys start of the week). Thanks, Ross PS we would like to stay there again next year for salcombe week (7th July next year)

We complained to Country Cottages in Salcombe about the lack of cleanliness in the property.
This included dirty & torn voile curtains to the lounge & kitchen, floor to ceiling, with 4 - 5 ft rips in them, dirty furniture, thick dust in quite a lot of places & dirt around the edges of the skirting & floors. We also found a pair of used ladies knickers under the bed along with a lot of dust, found by us due to dropping something that rolled under the bed. The feedback from Country Cottages, by e-mail, was that they were sorry, but the property would have a deep clean at the end of the season. When we booked this property, the cost of the rental includes cleaning, so it is not acceptable to make this the excuse for being dirty. We have been with Sykes on numerous times over the years, & this is by far the dirtiest property we have stayed in. We stayed in a cottage in July & it was spotlessly clean, so why can't this be clean? The difference seems to be when a property is cleaned by the owner it is a far better standard, but when it is cleaned by a cleaning company, the standard appears poor. We would appreciate your feedback as the Country Cottages response is not acceptable. e were asked to provide photos which we did

A lovely holiday home - it had everything we needed for the week, plenty of kitchen utensils etc.
(maybe too many glasses!) and the whole space was fabulous. The house was very clean when we arrived, the beds were comfortable, some good local information left out... can't really criticise anything. The top-floor shower is quite tight but we could cope with that (I imagine it's difficult for elderly people to use), there is another on the 2nd floor though so not a big deal. The utility room is a useful space, the lounge and garden were perfect for our family to relax in. The parking space is quite tight (this was listed as only suitable for medium cars so that's fair enough) but actually we could just about fit our people carrier in which was a bonus. We loved the week in Salcombe and would absolutely wish to re-book the cottage... ...however that would not be through Sykes directly, they shamefully messed up our original booking meaning Mayflower was a late substitution (which obviously worked out well in the end). I'd recommend going direct to Coast & Country in future (they seem to share cottages across their two websites) - local office, friendly staff - and avoid Sykes.
