What our customers say about their holidays

  • Nick - Verified booking

We had a nice stay here overall but we did leave a day early.

. The owner left our children Easter eggs and decorated the room with bunting as it was Easter.. Which was really kind. The house is decorated and equipped to a very high standard with everything you need. The area is nice with plenty of pubs but you need to be aware of the opening times for food. Whilst we was there not much was open on the days that we went out. We couldn’t go out much because of the weather being so bad. The Indian takeaway is very very expensive and isn’t nice food, the Chinese takeaway is cheap and isn’t nice food, but that’s our own preference. If you fancy a takeaway make sure you know the opening and closing times as we wanted a pizza around 9pm and the pizza/kebab shop had already closed. The chippy was nice and the pubs also serve nice home cooked meals. The sweet shop is also worth a visit. As someone else stated in their review there is nowhere to sit whilst using a mirror, no plugs near a mirror either. The road outside is very busy which wouldn’t bother some people but this disrupted sleep every night for us. We don’t own a dog and we did see that the holiday home accepted well behaved dogs. Unfortunately we could smell dogs especially in the living area from the cushions and rug. I’m sure this wouldn’t bother everyone but for us as we don’t own a dog the smell just lingered but this will happen when dogs are allowed in the property. Also dog hairs were on the downstairs bed were someone has let their dog sleep in the bed which we personally think shouldn’t be allowed as people who don’t own dogs don’t want to sleep in a bed with dog hairs. The upstairs bathroom was really hot like a sauna and we couldn’t figure out how to turn off the two radiators so we kept the door closed all the time due to the heat being unbearable. The hot tub was lovely, our children enjoyed going in every day and it’s a good size! We did however have maintenance messaging us early morning regarding the hot tub to come and clean it etc… We have stayed at many holiday homes and this work is usually done without disturbing the guests. Then on another occasion they wanted to come round and put up a curtain pole which we think should have been sorted before or after us leaving the property. We decided to pack our things Thursday night and leave a day early as we felt uncomfortable and unsettled.

We spent 3 weeks here in June and enjoyed the holiday.

The House was lovely, clean and comfortable, it supplied everything we needed – the walk in shower was excellent and the kitchen had everything anyone could need. It was truly a home from home. Caroline came to welcome us and offer advice of great places to eat and other than that the owners were not intrusive at all and the duck eggs were great!! If we had one [very] small complaint about the house itself, it was that the living room was a bit over-furnished, as another settee has been added since the photographs on the website which covered the full height window and meant opening that window was difficult due to having to lean over the settee to reach it, which considering the really high temperatures we had the first week was needed! However, our main problem was the enclosed field. We have a very enthusiastic German Shepherd and are conscious that he is not a nuisance to anyone, therefore the main thing we look for when renting a property is an enclosed garden, so the field was the main reason we rented this property. However, the grass was uncut and very high, which meant during the next 2 weeks when we had quite a lot of rain, when we took him out there, we ended up soaked to our knees. Also the steps up to it were uneven and difficult to negotiate as they are set into the back and curved in an arc with a steep soil gap at one side. The bracken on the bank was overhanging at least 2 steps and unavoidable when wet, so we couldn’t really take advantage of that field. A small amount of maintenance, such as cutting the bracken back and mowing a path around the field would have made all the difference. As the outside of the house is a thoroughfare to the farm, so not enclosed and there were free range chickens wandering about, we couldn’t allow him outside at all without supervision. It’s a very small point and shouldn’t put anyone off as people have commented that their dogs enjoyed this field, but they were there when grass would never reach that height. So it did spoil it a little for us – and him. We’re very happy to recommend the house to everyone, just want them to be warned if they go in the height of summer, the field might be a problem.

Had a lovely week's stay in the cottage.

The house is decorated to a high standard, it is larger than it appears in the photos and the winding staircase gives it so much character. Thank you for the shortbread on arrival they went down a treat. The sofa in the living room was so comfortable, it was difficult to get up after. The hot tub is very large, and could easily fit up to six people in it. The town of Moffat, while small has lots to do, it has plenty of cafes and pubs. There is an outlet shop 5 minutes away from the cottage with a lovely cafe, but be warned you can buy some stuff cheaper in other shops in the town. The toffee shop is also worth a visit to try some Irn Bru fudge. Some things to note about the cottage, it is located on a main road, so could be quite noisy with HGV's passing in the night. Parking is located on the street, but we never had an issue parking outside the cottage. A dressing table would be useful in the house as there was nowhere to do my hair and makeup and a hairdryer would also be useful. A guest book would be appreciated as I enjoy reading other people's recommendations of places to visit. In the information booklet it says you can connect your phone to the TV speakers in the room, however, when we attempted this the TV froze. When we contacted the owner asking how to resolve this, we were told not to connect our phone to the TV, so this needs amending in the information book as it is misleading. After leaving the property we were contacted by Sykes to say we would need to pay an extra fee for additional cleaning to the hot tub. This was surprising as we were present as the hot tub was refilled, and there didn't seem to be an issue. After 5 days we received another message from Sykes to say the matter had been closed with no information provided. This caused unnecessary stress and put a negative end to an otherwise enjoyable holiday.

    Not good value for money.

Arrived to a pile of rubbish in the garden and a used poo bag by the gate . Rubbish very kindly removed by a neighbour. No bin provided. Contact numbers provided on my paperwork were useless, no answering machine on landline and mobile number was a lady who was an ex cleaner who told me bins had been requested on numerous occasions to no avail. No welcome pack, the cleaning was what I would call "a lick and a promise" . A stained towel was left out for use and previous visitors food was left in the cupboard. Bedding was clean but well worn and "bobbly". The hoover was jammed full of muck which I couldn't fully remove. There was only one smoke detector in the property and no heat sensor, not sure if this meets current safety standards Did eventually speak to the owner and £50 was reimbursed but she seemed to think this mess was an acceptable situation for visitors to arrive too. The lady and her husband who removed the bags of rubbish and bottles were very kind and went out of there way for me, I can't praise them enough. The much needed holiday was not ruined but , spoilt for me. I was down to visit friends and attend a hospital appointments so, the added stress was far from welcome. All in all no real effort or thought gone into making this a welcoming place, will definitely not go back. I tried to contact Sykes on the Monday by email and kept being told my booking reference was incorrect. I too have cleaned a holiday let and the one I worked in had to be cleaned top to bottom and all basic essentials such as milk and tea, coffee, and sugar were left along with cake and biscuits. All bedding and towels had to be perfect or they were not used.

Just returned from a week at the cottage .

The cottage is furnished and decorated to a high standard, the owners have certainly gone the extra mile to provide the wow factor. Upon arrival it was spotless clean and very welcoming. The cottage has everything that you could possibly need the owners have listened to the previous guests requests and provided requested items ie mirror and hairdryer. The outside courtyard was great for our 2 dogs fully enclosed so no worries with let them out. Hot tub was great especially after a day of walking. Meg the owner was on hand to answer questions we had on the first day. The cottage is located on a busy road but we had no issues with sleeping during the night. We were able to park right outside the cottage all week except Saturday when we had gone out in the car and returned to find the park spaces full but we found a spot across the road. Location is great Black Bull pub right on the doorstep we had food there a couple of times was really good. Lots of other places for food and drink in the village. Overall a great cottage and would definitely return if we go back to Moffat
