What our customers say about their holidays
Andrew - Verified booking
The cottage is an excellent size, well equipped and very well positioned for local amenities.
The cottage would however benefit from a private garden area, perhaps with a swing set. But, it is set in a rural location well away from the main road so you do have a nice sense of privacy, but it would be nicer still to have the garden option to relax in. From the cottage it's a short drive to both Melksham and Devizes to do your usual food shopping and retail shopping, but Longleat safari as well as Chippenham, Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon and Bath are all nearby and worth a visit. Bradford on Avon is a quaint little place with Fair Trade independent shops and the other places are far bigger with the usual big Town/City facilities. Bath is a lovely city and there's lots there to enjoy. We spent time at Longleat Safari which was brilliant with our 5 year old son! There's lots to see and do there, and felt overall it was good value for money. Once the car safari had finished, there was still plenty to do and see and it was a full fun day out. We also visited Lacock, which is a lovely National Trust village and hall/museum where Harry Potter was filmed. There's a pretty village, with independent shops, National Trust shops and a good sized cafe to visit. Another lovely place, which is about 20 minutes drive from the cottage is Avebury, which has prehistoric stone monuments,as well as a hall, museum, church, shops & cafe. Both Lacock & Avebury are great places to visit with children or alone/couples and have good facilities. For families with younger children, there's a nice play park at Lacock for the children. Our son enjoyed the park and we went back a couple of times. We have had a lovely stay and enjoyed exploring the local area. There's plenty to see and do here and the cottage is a good base to use.

The Cartbarn is a beautifully restored barn.
Everything in it is of the highest quality. There is no using old things to fill gaps. Curtains, cushions and sofas all lovely and top quality. In the bedrooms white linen sheets and pillowcases and goose down duvet made it hard to get out of bed and the fabulous view was so relaxing. Upstairs is very spacious, light and airy with a giant bed and roomy en suites in both bedrooms and lots of storage for clothes . Claire had left exuberant jugs of flowers on the chest of drawers in both rooms. In the kitchen there was not a single utensil lacking during our stay and a plentiful supply of tea towels, j cloths, household roll etc made for an easy life. The garden at the Cartbarn is lovely, very private with good garden furniture and parasol with plenty of parking that doesnât overshadow the garden. You could not have nicer owners, so welcoming and generous , leaving some delicious goodies and carrying down a special garden chair for my sister who is disabled. Both Claire and William made us so welcome in an unfussy and unobtrusive way. The Cartbarn nestles into glorious countryside with a mass of lovely walks whilst being only a very short drive into the village with an interesting little high street, everything from specialist food shops to the co-op, not forgetting a very good affordable boutique and a main line station to London. We both felt refreshed and uplifted at the end of our week. It was very hard to leaveâ¦.

We were welcomed by the owners at arrival, as their lovely farmhouse is adjacent to the beautifully renovated Stables Cottage.
The farm itself lies at the end of a long flat drive surrounded by fields full of wildflowers, and is wonderfully peaceful. Despite there being a main road at the other end of the drive (with a useful bus stop nearby), the only noises you hear at the house itself are the occasional light plane taking off from the nearby airstrip, ducks on the stream and the clip-clopping of horses now and then. The house has an extremely well equipped kitchen diner and a roomy and comfortable lounge with a range of books and games to play. On our one really rainy day we made use of these. TV and internet available (the latter fast enough to keep our two adult children happy). On our days out, I would agree with other visitors that the local footpaths are difficult to find. We used the canal towpath for most of our excursions â the spectacular Caen Hill Locks are a must. If we could suggest any improvements, a rotary washing line might have been helpful (though I can understand not wanting to spoil the vista) and we have found a ringbinder full of instruction books for appliances, places to eat etc. helpful in other properties. We really enjoyed our stay, despite the pre-heatwave weather, and if we are in the area again would certainly return to Stables Cottage.

We booked Stables Cottage for a party of four friends to explore the local area, Devizes and the nearby Neolithic sites.
The property was in a stunning location removed from the main road being very peaceful, secluded and relaxing. Plenty of wildlife around. We arrived late on Friday and the owner came to check on us the following morning. We had a visit from a very friendly dog who was not disruptive in the least. The basics were provided on arrival (thanks!) and there was no lack of kitchen utensils and c ookware. The property is a good walk from Bowerhill & Melksham and I would not recommend that due to the busy roads. There is a bus stop outside the property entrance and on the other side of the road. If you need a taxi service I must recommend AAP Taxis who happily ferried us around. The property is near a bridleway so plenty of excuses to stretch your legs and there are also plenty of public footpaths nearby. In short a lovely property to get away too, if you want some peace and quite with the chance to explore thrown in too. We would come back again.
