What our customers say about their holidays

I actually would give less stars, but I have a feeling I just didn’t realize quite how inconvenient certain things would be. This place was amazing and so cool. I wanted sooo much to love this place. However, having the toilet on the ground floor was just the worst experience. Having it on the first floor (2nd level) would’ve made more sense. But having to go from the bedroom to the ground floor in the middle of the night was terrifying. And unfortunately I was allergic to something in the castle. I don’t know if it was related to the strong musty smell, but the first night my neck started the hurt. The second night I felt so out of breath. And we climbed a lot of hills outdoor with no problem. After the second night I also noticed that my lymph nodes were swollen and extremely sore to the touch. We knew there would be no WiFi. But we had no mobile signal either. So even just trying to look up the weather to plan our next day was impossible. We couldn’t look up car parks, order tickets for events…nothing. We actually left a full day early and only stayed 3 nights instead of 4 because I knew something was wrong. But obviously that couldn’t have been predicted. Again, the place itself was very cool and I wanted to love it. They left us nice food, a lot of which we didn’t have time to eat. It was very clean. Be prepared for dogs and cows as alarm clocks though. There were dogs not too far that barked a LOT. It was nice having a washer and dryer there. And the garden was so perfect. I wish I had not had such a bad reaction to something there. Just be prepared to FULLY unplug. If you’re prepared for that, and prepared for going up and down two flights of spiral stairs from the bedroom to the bathroom, you’re good.

The property doesn't offer any comfortable seating downstairs. Poorly laid out room design, huge dining table in a room which would be much better with a beautiful comfortable sofa / chairs. cramped and gloomy sitting room upstairs with only one good chair. Garden was a mess. Claustrophobic with no view unless you stood on a wall. Uncut lawn, out of control weeds, sad looking flower pots, stone piles randomly plonked. Some garden furniture unusable as was literally falling apart, other furniture rusting with no cushions. Did find some cushions in the laundry room but were covered in bird poop and smelled bad. Attached to one side of the garden has a chicken coop, they don't smell so good and are noisy. The other side of the garden has a cow barn attached which also has strong smell. I keep livestock myself so am used to all that entails but I think it should be made much clearer that you will be living in the yard with them Free range goats which were lovely but have a habit of incessantly head butting the glass doors if they can see you. Amusing for 5 minutes thereafter just a nuisance. I think this property is trying to be quirky / romantic but it's not a castle it's not comfortable and leaving a few stones around outside does not constitute a fabulous garden. The food basket was a nice touch. I suppose it depends on what you're used to but we found the property cramped, uncomfortable a bit of an endurance and were glad to leave.

Scargill is a beautiful and a very atmospheric place to stay. ideal for romantic breaks and getting away with that special someone. It was very clean and well equipped also the welcome hamper was a great touch. The log burning stove was very cosy. The building has a stone spiral staircase leading to the sitting room and the bedroom at the top. So if you have bad joints or generally unfit you may struggle with it. It just adds to the charm of this amazing place though. Scargill is situated in the grounds of a working farm so working dogs barking at all hours can be heard, also due to the animals outside flies especially in the bedroom can be a bother. We stayed in November so in the summer I guess it could be worse? We perhaps could have done with a bit more local knowledge as to where to walk as we were often unsure as to exactly which track or field to explore as the public footpath signs often led to a dead end up a farmers yard or actually disappear altogether leaving us guessing as to which way to go. But that’s us city folk for you having no idea!! And no way a fault of anyone but ourselves. We had a fab time and enjoyed the fresh air and wildlife. If you want lots to do though then maybe scargill isn’t the place to get it. But it is still a great place. 😁
