What our customers say about their holidays

We really enjoyed our short break at Hapton Folly.
A wonderful quirky retreat in the heart of the beautiful Hampshire village of Hambledon. The surrounding area provides ample opportunity for walking, with a very local and hospitable pub (The Vine) for food and drink. The village shop (Peopleâs Market) is well stocked and fairly priced for all needs. The Old Forge tea rooms (a short walk away) provides lovely breakfasts, teas etc., and is well worth a visit. There are other good hostelries within striking distance We were warmly welcomed on arrival by our delightful host, Lindy, and immediately felt at home. The folly itself is very well presented, clean and equipped with everything needed for a comfortable holiday. We were extremely lucky that the British weather was unusually sunny and warm during our stay and we were able to dine al fresco most evenings. The views from the Folly were breathtakingly beautiful (especially from the rooftop) and the lounge area was a comfortable place to unwind or just watch TV. The kitchen is compact, but features everything needed for home cooking â Cooker, hob, microwave, kettle, coffe machine and fridge. A very good range of kitchenware and utensils are also provided. On the 2nd floor is the main bedroom featuring a very comfortable double bed complete with crisply laundered linen and, again, fabulous views. The ground floor also houses the shower room/toilet, and the shower is reliably warm . Considering the size of building, it has clearly been very well thought out to optimise available space. Although the stairs may be a little challenging for the less able, The Folly is definitely a âhidden gemâ for a relaxing break, and we would thoroughly recommend.

The house itself was clean and well equipped.
The wifi connection was poor and every hour or so buffered, meaning I could not watch on demand TV or use zoom. I would not recommend relying on the wifi if you want to work from there. I struggled with the parking clock. I could never get parking at the small Gosport parking area and had to change every 20 hrs between Cannon Street and St Thomas street. For stays of a few days I imagine this is fine, but for me having to every day move my car back and forwards was hugely annoying (and wasted 30 minutes every morning especially if i dont want to leave at 8am). It meant having to plan your car usage strategically: either parking just before closing to get a lie in (consequently parking and walking around a car park in the dark) or waking up early before the car park opens. This was not an enjoyable experience and felt like a hassle for a holiday. The property description should accurately state what free means i.e "free public parking for 20 hours each day - guests will have to move their car each day to a different car park due to the no return rules." The road directly out front is extremely busy and very noisy. This is fine if you are planning on not staying in during the day and definitely explains why children are not permitted at the house. Finally, whilst it says pet friendly, I would give caution, as the road out front is extremely busy and has a very small pedestrian pathway. I had to keep my dog on a very tight lead and step out in front first for safety.

We had a lovely stay at Starboard Light which is a cosy little cottage and perfect for two.
As per the description, there is no parking at the cottage but there was a parking disc provided and plenty of nearby car parks within a two minute walk. The only comment I would make is that pulling up outside in the lane to unload the car was not an option for us. Although it's a small road, it is busy and a main through route. It's also narrow and we felt we would have caused an obstruction if we stopped there. However, the Quay car park is close by and luckily we travel light. We had a short weekend stay and didn't actually use any of the kitchen facilities in the cottage as we ate out every day. There's a good selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants right on the doorstep. However, the kitchen looked to be well stocked with everything you would need. The bedroom and bathroom were gorgeous and the bed was so comfy. The shower was excellent and all the furniture and decor was lovely and homely. We would definitely consider a return visit.

The cottage was well presented and well equipped.
However, we experienced several unfortunate issues. We searched for the parking clock for ten minutes when we arrived and eventually found out that the cleaning staff had taken it with them so we had to rapidly unpack in the very narrow street and pay for overnight parking nearby. Then we had to wait in for the clock to be returned before we could go out to eat- not what you need after a long journey. When we at last retired we found that the bed had an ill fitting mattress topper on it as the mattress had certainly seen better days. This led to us giving up by Sunday morning and returning home then. Overall the cottage was clean but the windows were covered in perpetual condensation that however much was mopped up came back almost instantly. Of course this meant there was mould on the window sills. Worrying if you are an asthmatic. Perhaps this particular rent was more suited to summer visitors rather than a winter stay?

We had a good holiday at Hapton Folly despite the wet weather.
The folly is a quirky holiday home, like staying in your own little castle. The bed was very comfortable with crisp white linen. The weather turned chilly during our stay but there were electric radiators on each floor which we used one evening and these warmed the space quickly. We really enjoyed the views from the windows in the rooms and especially from the terrace on top of the tower. There is a table, chairs and fairy lights so a nice place for drinks at the end of the day. There are good views across the village and the valley. The kitchen is small but well equipped to cook some meals. We appreciated the welcome bottle of wine. Hambledon is a very quiet and pretty village. We visited Winchester and Southsea nearby. We also enjoyed visiting the Hambledon vineyard and had lunch and a wine tour. It is a short walk from the property, just 10 minutes across the vineyard by the village school.
