What our customers say about their holidays

  • Taylor - Verified booking

It’s the worst cottage I’ve ever stayed in, and we’ve never had the feeling where we want to get home.

We arrived in the dark, and went straight to bed, however even in the tiredness there was a smell. We woke up the following day, and the first thing we done was to go in the garden with the dogs. They couldn’t use it as it was so overgrown they couldn’t walk through it, and there was dog poo everywhere. There is a resident next door who said he cleared the path of dog poo also. The owner did get the garden sorted. I wouldn’t also class the garden as enclosed. Anyone at anytime can walk through as there’s a path that runs through the middle, it also isn’t very accessible and it’s quite dangerous, especially the steps down to the house as they are steep. Even worse when it’s been raining as there is a lot of moss which is very slippery. There are also two dog bowls in the garden which have been sat there a while as they had green algae floating in them. Back to the property, the smell we couldn’t get rid of and it stuck to all of our clothes. Unfortunately there is no washing machine to be able to wash the clothes. The property itself needs renovation work done as it’s very dated and also not practical. The floorboards in areas rock and squeak so loud so you cannot get up during the night without waking everyone up. The stairs are dangerously steep and narrow. They are not child or dog friendly, as an adult can barely get down them without holding on. The ceilings are also so low going into the bathroom you have to remember to duck. The bathroom is just not practical, it’s tiny. If you are of a larger size then I wouldn’t bother booking! The toilet flush is temperamental, the water in the sink ran out brown on and off which was disgusting. The shower has mould in, and the shower is just appalling. There is no water pressure unless you’d like an ice cold shower. You have to turn it right up and run it for a good 5 minutes before any hot water comes out (same with taps throughout), and it dribbles! It eventually scalds you and then you turn to put a little cold water in the mix and it turns to ice. Downstairs was ok, again just very dated and smelt. The sofa is squeaky. The kitchen is also tiny, and has to be spread out for storage into the dining room. The fridge was turned off when we arrived so had to switch that on to get it cold and the freezer door was broken. The windows are draughty and the bedroom one didn’t close properly. We also had rain when staying and they leaked water inside. The front door and porch door also need sorting as they don’t close properly. The porch door is very worse for wear as it’s splitting and is probably due to be replaced. The last thing, is the parking. It’s appalling that a cottage hasn’t got any form of parking. It confuses me why all the others along the row have parking round the side and this one doesn’t? You have to leave your car parked against a wall tight, on a narrow country road. There is a pub opposite which the owner could make an agreement with that one car could park there! Overall, I wouldn’t stay here again and we were really disappointed as it looked really lovely in the images but Sykes really need to update the listing to be accurate. I did contact during the stay, but they were so slow to respond that I gave up waiting. We spend so much time travelling the UK with the dogs, and go to a lot of cottages, but this one just doesn’t seem fit to be renting out to the public. It really needs updating and work done prior to doing this! We thought maybe because it was a listed property, that’s why they’ve not done anything with it, but then we looked on a competitors website at the rental cottage next door and they’ve made it practical! I feel so bad but someone needs to be honest to help get this improved and it’s very disappointing at present.

From the minute we arrived at the cottage, we knew we were going to fall in love with it.

I had a quick glance over the reviews but unless they are consistent, I don't pay too much attention. Yes, it took me a few minutes to get the car parked, but I did it! I have a Nissan Juke and it fitted in the space perfectly. So we enter the cottage and the dogs go off for a sniff....straight to the care box provided by the hosts!! We loved this sentiment. Unpacked the car and settled straight in. The sun was shining, considering we'd just had weeks of rain! Husband read the welcome folder and started planning our walks. I felt immediately at home, as did my dogs. We always take blankets to dog friendly stays but there were some provided if required. Another sweet touch. Everything available to us were perfect. All furniture was comfortable and the wood burner was my favourite touch. I would definitely recommend this stay to anyone and everyone. Great value for money. The surrounding facilities are great. The Cove pub on the front of Chesil beach is fab and also dog friendly. The walks are brilliant. And most of all, people were incredibly friendly. Super tasty big portions of fish and chips up the road at Salty Towers. We couldn't fault a thing. Only 1 thing I'd agree with, with someone else's review would be a little side lamp in the living room. But it didn't affect a thing. We will return with our dogs and we cannot wait to.ezplore more of Portland. The hosts have put a lot of thought into all aspects of their cottage and we thank them for it.

Should have been better for the price.

Laurel cottage was let down by Dreams not paying attention to the details which turn a good holiday into a great one. Specifically and to help Dreams improve the cottage for the future: No welcome pack - not even milk to make a cup of tea. Cottage not as clean as we would have expected especially as access was not permitted until 5.00 pm. The armchair, settee, toilet and towel rail were tired and the windows very dirty. Printed TV instructions were inadequate but luckily someone had left a scrap of paper on which they had written how to operate the set. There was no oven glove but there were dishwasher tablets even though there was no dishwasher. There were no facilities for recycling and quite a few of the lounge light bulbs didn't work. The outdoor seating area is small and doesn't gets the sun and the archway joining Laurel Cottage to Magnolia Cottage could do with rethatching. The website and cottage details mention a pub near by.....it is closed and looks like it has been for about two years. On the plus side, the bed was extremely comfortable and the cottage nice and cool after a warm day's walking in the beautiful surrounding Dorset countryside. We enjoyed our stay but Dreams should take time and care to keep Laurel Cottage in the condition it and the price deserves.

It’s a lovely cottage and location.

The cottage has comfortably sized bedrooms, living room and dining room. The original open fireplace is a lovely addition although not needed for a summer stay. We liked being able to pop over the road for a drink in the good quality pub-restaurant and loved being able to walk through the fields to the coast and observe local wildlife: deer, hares and many birds. Langton Herring is in easy reach of Weymouth, Lulworth Cove, Bridport and Lyme Regis. We didn’t like the tiny bathroom or having to crouch to move from room to room upstairs. Smartening up the bathroom would help a lot, as would some subtle signage to remind guests to duck to avoid banging their head at the top of the stairs. Parking was fine once we’d worked it out. A map of where to park would be much more useful than the photos provided in the folder. Having to double bag all rubbish, as stated in the host’s information folder, was the worst thing. Having paid a lot of money, being required to fish rubbish out of the bin to double-bag it just so the owner can avoid paying trade rates for waste felt very unwelcome. It’s not our responsibility to help someone avoid paying taxes they don’t like.

We had a really lovely stay at Badgers Cottage, starting with a wonderful welcome package full of delicious local produce, which was a real treat.

The beautiful cottage was very well equipped, with every pot, pan, and utensil you could need, including a slow cooker, and the living room had the comfiest sofa I'd ever sat on. The garden was a real sun-trap and the bench overlooking a field of lambs was the perfect spot for a cuppa and a book. Langton Herring is so peaceful and The Elm Tree Inn is a stone's throw from the front door. Plenty of beautiful walks with stunning views and all the people we met were really friendly. It was great base for days out to Weymouth, Portland, Abbotsbury & Durdle Door. The only feedback I'd have is that the bathroom needed a little TLC, but we were informed about this prior to our visit. Also, we had a couple of blustery days and there was a lot of noise coming from the chimney in the twin room, I think where there's a covering to prevent drafts which blew about a bit. Boys were happier once we'd established this wasn't a ghost. ;) Overall I would not hesitate to recommend Badgers Cottage as a perfect base for a Dorset holiday. Thank you for helping us make happy family memories.
