About this property

Nestled amongst 3 acres of private landscaped gardens which are dotted with oak, olive and fruit trees as well as fragrant lavender, you will find Villa Romarin. This 5-bedroom home is a wonderful place to stay on a holiday in Provence as the countryside, historic villages and the coast are all within easy reach.

As you enter this gorgeous villa you will notice the modern touches working in harmony with the period building which hails from the 1860s. The owners have retained the original beams and fireplaces and have chosen local floor tiles and neutral tones to decorate with, while the comfy sofas and fully stocked bookshelves will make you feel at home.

The open-plan living and dining space in the main villa is a great place to gather for meals or by the fireside with a glass of wine if you visit during Autumn or winter. Though there are plenty of nearby restaurants, you will find everything you need to cook a sumptuous meal in the fully-fitted kitchen which is just next to the living area. Downstairs you can also access the gym and a handy laundry room.

There are 5 bedrooms available for guests. 3 of these are in the main villa and include a large suite on the first floor complete with a free-standing bath tub. The other 2 bedrooms are located in individual cottages within the grounds which could be perfect for a few family groups travelling together. Some of the rooms have sofa beds or extra beds which can be used for children, making this a really flexible home which can easily suit the needs of your party.

The garden here is just as impressive as the house and is the ultimate place to unwind and enjoy nature. The vast, landscaped grounds are covered in floral planting and established trees, including olive trees which are used to make olive oil which can be purchased to remember your trip. There are lots of seating areas and covered dining spaces to choose from, all with panoramic views, plus the inviting private pool to cool down in the heat of the day.

There is lots to see and do locally, with a wealth of parks, nature reserves and charming towns and villages within easy reach. The home is actually located within the Regional Natural Park of the Alpilles which is fantastic for lovers of outdoor pursuits. This beautiful, protected park is home to over 250 species of birds and covers forested areas as well as mountains. Visitors can follow walking routes, go climbing on the limestone rock, hire bikes or see the landscape on horseback. Also close to the villa there are lots of historic windmills and a system of incredible Roman aqueducts which you can see.

The nearest shops, restaurants and cultural attractions can be found in Fontvieille which is just 4.5km away while Arles, France’s largest city is a mere 12km away and has a selection of historic buildings, museums, galleries and eateries.

Located within picturesque protected parkland, close to the village of Fontvieille, Villa Romarin is the ideal base for your holiday in Provence. There are lots of towns and villages within easy reach, endless outdoor activities on offer and even beaches just 35km away.

The villa is perfectly located for those who enjoy spending time in nature as the home is surrounded by a vast regional park. Head out in to the mountains or the forest for an exhilarating morning run or a spot of bouldering on the staggering limestone rocks. There are lots of places nearby to hire bikes and a number of equestrian centres where you can join in with treks through the verdant landscape which would be a lovely family activity followed by a well-earned picnic.

Though the home feels secluded as it is enveloped by green fields and vineyards, you are not isolated here and the nearest village is just 4.5km away by car. Fontvieille is a quaint village built within a former limestone quarry and all of the stunning buildings are of course built from the local stone. The village has been thriving since the 1600s and the picturesque centre is a great place for an afternoon stroll. One of the main attractions is the Chateau de Montauban which is a grand residence built in the 17th century, the building is a delightful place to visit in its own right but many visitors flock here as it was the summer home of beloved French writer Alphonse Daudet. The Chateau also has a local history museum inside, while fans of Alphonse Daudet can visit the small museum based on him and Ribert Mill which inspired his 1860s work “From my windmill”. The whole village is surrounded by such windmills and if you would like to see more you can follow the hour-long walking trail known as the path of the mills. Back in the heart of the village you will also find shops, cafes and restaurants as well as a market held on Mondays and Fridays.

The city of Arles is another place you could visit for the day and is just 12km away from the house. This historic city is the largest in France and yet is often overlooked by tourists. The city was founded around 2000 years ago by Roman settlers and the remains of a number of Roman buildings are still intact today. The huge amphitheatre, the Roman baths and the ancient graveyards are just a few of the sights you can see on a trip to Arles. The city is also known for its connection with the artist Vincent Van Gogh who moved to the area in 1888 and worked on hundreds of paintings there. There is a museum and gallery dedicated to Van Gogh’s works or if you would prefer you can follow a self-guided walking tour. The tour will take you to places which inspired different paintings and also locations that Van Gogh spent time, including the hospital he spent time in after he cut off his ear! After a busy day of sightseeing why not stop at the Place du Forum square for dinner al-fresco.

There are plenty of other brilliant places you can visit nearby, including the must-see town of Saint Remy de Provence which is 18km away. The former Papal city of Avignon is wonderful place to visit and is just 35km away, or maybe you would like to visit the coast then why not drive the 35km to the famous Seashell Beach for a relaxing beach day.

We had a great vacation in the villa. The host is very friendly as well.

Villa Romarin was bigger than we expected with a large, well-appointed home, two guest cottages, an orchard and olive grove and big swimming pool area. The entire facility is beautifully maintained and the gardens a delight to walk through. Our group of seven adults and one toddler had plenty of room to be together and to be alone. This kind of space and comfort provided the perfect backdrop for our family. We knew we would use the kitchen daily, and loved going to the local markets to stock up on in-season fruits and vegetables. We were able to drive short distances and visit interesting sights such as Le Baux de Provence, Pont du Gard, Arles and Avignon. The swimming pool is an especially nice feature of the property, perched on the hillside above the house. We enjoyed many hours poolside each day. The property owners were enormously hospitable and accommodating. It was a wonderful week!
