This architect-designed two-storey timber cabin sits in a peaceful woodland clearing overlooking Lough Oughter, within Killykeen Forest Park in County Cavan. The cabin offers families and couples an active lakeside break, with forest trails, water sports, and wildlife-watching all accessible from the development. The lough forms part of the Lough Oughter site, a designated Special Protection Area and Special Area of Conservation, where over 47 bird species have been recorded alongside red squirrels, otters, pine martens, and nine species of bat. The historic Clogh Oughter Castle stands on an island in the lough, and the uninhabited Inch Island can be reached by boat from the on-site jetty. Drumlane Monastery overlooks Lough Derrybrick (11 miles) further along the waterway. Within the forest park, a network of trails ranges from gentle walks to a scenic 30-mile cycling loop through Belturbet, Miltown, and Killeshandra, while the lake provides fishing, boat hire, kayaking, and paddle boarding.
Arranged over two storeys, the split-level interior is anchored by a generous open-plan living and dining area with the kitchen integrated alongside. A private balcony opens from the living area, framing views across the lake. The timber construction gives the space a warm, natural feel, and the architect-designed interiors are rich with character, filled with contemporary furniture, art, and carefully selected textiles. Away from the open-plan space, a separate sitting room offers a quieter retreat, with the wood burner as its focal point and a Smart TV alongside. Both bedrooms are fitted with double beds and carry the same considered, design-led aesthetic, each with its own collection of art and thoughtful finishing touches that give every room a distinct personality. The shower room, fitted with a shower and WC, completes the accommodation.
The cabin has its own enclosed garden with a terrace and BBQ for al fresco dining. Across the wider development, several facilities are shared with other guests: a covered outdoor seating area, bicycle hire, boat hire, kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing from the lakeside jetty. A nature spa on the development, also shared with other guests, offers hot tubs, a Japanese bath, a sauna, and therapist-led treatments. A licensed bar and shop are available on the development. On-site parking is provided.
