About this property
This detached log cabin sits within Killykeen Forest Park on the shores of Lough Oughter in County Cavan, surrounded by ancient woodland and a network of interconnected lakes and waterways. Couples and families seeking a restorative break in nature have a genuine forest retreat here, with wildlife, water, and woodland trails to explore. The lake forms part of the Lough Oughter Complex, a designated Special Protection Area and Special Area of Conservation, home to otters, red squirrels, pine martens, and over 47 recorded bird species, reflecting the area's ecological significance. The historic Clogh Oughter Castle can be reached by boat across the lake, while the uninhabited Inch Island offers another waterborne excursion. On land, the forest park provides walking trails and cycling routes, including a scenic 30-mile loop through the surrounding countryside. The ruins of Drumlane Monastery overlook Lough Derrybrick, adding a layer of history to the landscape.
A well-equipped kitchen and dining area forms the social hub of the cabin, with space to prepare meals and eat together at the table. An open-plan layout creates an easy flow from the cooking area through to a separate sitting room, where a wood burner takes pride of place. Warmth from the fire fills the room, while a Smart TV, a shelf full of books, and a selection of games provide plenty of indoor entertainment. Low-level lighting throughout gives the cabin an atmospheric feel that complements the woodland setting; even with the curtains drawn, the sounds of the forest filter in. Both bedrooms are set apart from the living spaces, each furnished with a king-size bed and a quietly comfortable, restful character. The first offers generous proportions, while the second provides an equally inviting space to unwind. A single shower room, serving both bedrooms, is fitted with a shower and WC.
The cabin has its own private terrace with a BBQ for dining alfresco. A covered outdoor seating area, shared with other guests, offers a place to gather around an open fire. Guests can also access bicycle hire, kayaking, paddleboarding, boat tours, and fishing from a jetty on the lake, all shared with other guests across the site. The on-site spa, shared with other guests, features hot tubs, a Japanese bath, a sauna, and therapist-led treatments. A shop and licensed bar on the site are also available to all guests. Parking is available on-site.
