Island Lodge in Chelmsford is a well-received holiday rental, praised for its cleanliness, picturesque canal views, and peaceful atmosphere. Guests enjoyed the local footpaths, proximity to pubs and a lovely tea room, as well as the relaxing garden. The accommodation is described as cosy, with a comfortable bed and a welcoming feel. Some guests mentioned a welcome pack, adding to the positive experience.
The property consistently receives high remarks for its immaculate and cosy condition, indicating a high standard of cleanliness that guests appreciate.
The location is celebrated for its stunning canal views, access to local footpaths, and nearby pubs and tea rooms. The peacefulness and wildlife add to the charm, although one mention of a smell from the toilet system suggests a minor issue.
Guests find the beds comfortable and the lodge cosy, contributing to a good night's sleep and a relaxing stay. However, a suggestion to bring cushions for outdoor benches indicates room for improvement in outdoor comfort.
The lodge is well-furnished and laid out, with plenty of natural light. However, a couple of guests noted the absence of some items and a broom, suggesting minor gaps in facilities and maintenance.
While guests mentioned a welcome pack, which indicates thoughtfulness, there is not enough information to determine if such gestures are consistent or to what extent they impact the overall experience. It should be noted that such gifts are a bonus and not guaranteed.

Island Lodge is an excellent base to explore the local countryside. The towpath follows the river for 14 miles from its beginning in Chelmsford, to the sea at Heybridge Basin and Maldon. Paper Mill Lock is the halfway point. For those wishing to go beyond the river, there are plenty of footpaths either side of the valley. Nearby is Danbury Common and Blakes Wood (National Trust) as well as Danbury Woods. The valley ‘hills’ also make it popular for cyclists as the Ride London passes through Paper Mill Lock. Nearby, the villages of Danbury and Little Baddow offer good restaurants and facilities. Also, you are only a few miles away from the sea at Maldon, or the many attractions of Chelmsford City. It is very accessible with the A12 being 10 minutes away, yet you are immediately amongst nature and by the water of the beautiful Essex countryside.
