About this property

Gingerbread Cottage is the quintessential Lakeland cottage, nestled along a peaceful lane, just minutes from the quaint cobbled streets of Hawkshead. A perfect retreat for a romantic holiday, birthday or honeymoon. The stylish interior has been beautifully created with great flair to provide the perfect bolt hole: a relaxing living space, with Kardean flooring and rug, wood burning stove and cosy window seat. The cosy kitchen/diner is fully equipped, and a stable door leads to the rear. Upstairs to a beautiful Macintosh mahogany king size bed, a light and bright room, with a separate dressing room and a fully tiled shower room.

A parking permit is provided for nearby car park, and there is a secure outhouse suitable for bike storage. Hawkshead village is full of cosy pubs, cafes and shops. Its’ pedestrianised centre is quaint & fascinating, home to Beatrix Potter Gallery and many of her inspirations for her books are nearby. Easy walks around Esthwaite Water (also a trout fishery) and Tarn Hows provide unforgettable scenery, whereas the more energetic will be tempted by Latterbarrow, Claife Heights. A short drive away is Near Sawrey a small hamlet where Beatrix Potter’s house Hill Top can be visited and another traditional pub – The Tower Bank Arms.

For a wide range of sophisticated shops, acclaimed Lake District restaurants and memorable lake cruises from Waterhead Pier, head north a short distance to Ambleside on the northern shores of Lake Windermere. Also nearby is the excellent Drunken Duck Inn and Restaurant - highly recommended. To experience the hustle and bustle of Bowness, a popular Lake District holiday destination on the other side of Lake Windermere, you only need drive a short distance to the car ferry crossing and hop across either on foot or with your car.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.
