Yew Tree Cottage in Ambleside is praised for its excellent location and cosy atmosphere, suitable for families and couples. While guests appreciate the proximity to the town centre and the property's amenities, there are recurring concerns about dampness and the need for maintenance and a deep clean.
Guests have repeatedly mentioned issues with dampness, mould, and a musty smell, particularly in the bedrooms. There are also comments about the property not being well cleaned, with blocked hoovers and stained carpets.
The cottage's location is highly praised for being central and close to Ambleside, making it convenient for exploring the town and the Lake District.
The property is described as cosy and comfortable by some, but others have noted discomfort due to damp issues and poor quality beds, affecting the overall comfort level.
While the property is considered well-equipped by some, there are numerous mentions of maintenance issues such as slow-draining showers, broken blinds, and the need for updates in the kitchen and bathroom facilities.
There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the property owners or managers, so it is not possible to provide a score in this category.
This spacious, ground floor cottage-apartment has two-bedrooms sleeping up to four people, with the accommodation all on one-level. It is situated in a pretty little cul-de-sac, alongside the mature grounds of a former country hotel. The centre of Ambleside, which is situated at the heart of the Lake District National Park, is just a five-minute stroll away.
Walk up to the covered porch and enter your lovely open plan L shaped sitting room with dining and kitchen area. After your journey sit and relax on the comfortable furniture and unwind in this sunny and stylish room or go outside to your small patio area with a drink, to enjoy the lovely views to Wansfell Pike and to hear the distant sound of Stock Ghyll Beck.
Discover your comfortable bedrooms, situated privately at each end of your sitting room, where you will find a twin room which has use of its own but separate bathroom and a double with king-size bed and en-suite walk in shower.
Take an easy walk into the centre of town to find excellent restaurants, cafes and pubs. Walk into beautiful Rothay Park and picnic by the river or play tennis and bowls at the recreation ground next door. Walk a further fifteen-minutes to Waterhead and enjoy a cruise on gorgeous Lake Windermere or hire a boat to explore its secluded bays.
Choose one of the many spectacular walks that are available to you right from your doorstep and experience some of the most spectacular and idyllic walks in the Lake District. Tour the area by car or by bus, passing by sparkling lakes and driving through dramatic valleys as you discover the National Park’s towns and villages, each with its own unique character.
Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

The furniture and beds were comfortable and all utensils that we required were there. However the cottage itself requires treatment for damp. This showed up in every room but especially in the bedrooms. The wardrobe in the double bedroom wall was black. The shower room was also pretty bad and could be doing with a deep clean. Window nets & blind filthy. Kitchen floor not clean. Such a pity as the cottage is in a good location and could be made so much better. Next door (Holly Cottage) having some work done and storing supplies outside our door. We were told by the owner when we arrived that the items would be removed shortly. More stuff arrived mid week. This was all cleared away on Friday (our last day). Meanwhile because of Tuesday's heavy rain it was muddy outside Unfortunately not the best stay we've had with Sykes Cottages.

The accommodation was comfortable and cosy with plenty of radiators to keep us warm. Adequate facilities in the kitchen. Very comfortable beds. Great to be able to park right next to the property. Loved the location - we could walk into Ambleside in ten minutes.
