About this property

This sumptuously refurbished ground floor cottage apartment forms part of a traditional colour-washed gentleman’s residence and has many original features dating back 400 years. Located at the foot of Loughrigg Fell in the hamlet of Clappersgate, its a short stroll from Ambleside. The spacious lounge has oak beams, original panelling, stained glass windows and the fabulous open grate and surround are complimented by luxurious soft furnishings and tasteful palettes for your comfort.

The fully fitted dining kitchen, has slate floors, with a large utility / laundry. There is one spacious bedroom with king size bed, a window seat and plenty of storage, and a fully tiled bathroom with power shower. There is a suntrap courtyard with fell views to the rear and garden furniture and a porch to the front with views to the south. Private parking immediately outside. Ambleside is a contemporary, characterful Lakeland village with a spectacular backdrop of Lake District fells. Ideal for walking, cycling or boating activities, it is also a lovely spot for contemporary shops, leisurely lake cruises, award-winning Lake District restaurants and cosy traditional pubs. There are 2 cinemas, a Jazz bar and the Lake Cruises leave regularly from Waterhead, a great way to explore without driving. The tiny 'Bridge House' is one of the most photographed places here, sat on a bridge in the middle of the village. Oh, and don’t forget our Roman fort, Galava. One of William Wordsworth's former family homes can be visited nearby at Rydal Mount & Gardens. His Grasmere home, Dove Cottage, is also worth a visit and only a short drive away on the scenic A591. You can also head over the equally scenic Kirkstone Pass to the beautiful Ullswater Valley.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

We picked Todd Crag after looking at reviews & that it had all we required in terms of facilities. The property was clean & warm on our arrival which was particularly welcome after our stressful 24 hours. Our initial reaction was wow at the entrance hall ( after a chuckle at the quirky back door ) a quick inspection found a property furnished in keeping with the age of the house , the sofa were very comfy to chill out on. The bedroom comfy kingsize bed , with clean adequate storage for a holiday. The many side lamps fitted around the property gave a lovely ambiance when on( I personally dislike overhead lighting & rarely use it ). The large kitchen was lovely & enough of everything to cook quick meals in the evening with the dishwasher meaning we didnt have a ton of washing up. Bathroom & shower all good, with lovely fluffy towels provided. We didn't need the washer & dryer but appreciated they were there. So all in all a wonderful week, with walks straight from the door meaning we didn't use the car for 4 days. The driveway is very steep & there's not much visibility to pull out but as there is so many walks from the door it was a very minor inconvenience. You are on the main road from Ambleside however the secondary glazing reduces the noise & we weren't disturbed overnight. Yes there is a property above us which was occupied by the owners for the last couple of days of our break we rarely heard any noise & then only very occasional light footsteps which did not disturb us in any way . All in all a fabulous property , which we will be returning to .

Myself, my wife and 11 month old Cavapoo pup. Upon arrival we were pleased that it was clean and tidy and didn't smell of previous doggy guests, which was a nice surprise. It's situated in a lovely spot with lovely views to the front and from the elevated rear garden. Nice walk into Ambleside via easy roadside path. Good points to the property were that it had a well appointed kitchen and a parking space right outside which is a bonus. Steep driveway definitely but if you enter and exit very slowly it's fine. All in all we were happy with the accommodation. Plenty of hot water for showers / baths and a utility room for any washing (although washer and dryer are both very small capacity and there are only a hanfull of pegs provided for hanging out any laundry). Tv's in lounge, bedroom and kitchen, however TV in lounge only received very limited terrestrial channels and the picture kept pulsing so think the TV is on its way out. Only warning I would give to anyone thinking of staying here is that this is the ground floor of a cottage that has accommodation above it. We were lucky in that there were only people occupying the floor above us for the first night of our stay, but that night we could hear their radio (or possibly TV) and any movement they made by walking around, etc. Not their fault but the constant noise from very creaky floorboards and poor soundproofing was unsettling and as a consequence gave us a restless night. Had there been someone upstairs for our entire stay then I doubt we would have lasted the week. Heating was on strangely (it hit 26deg C outside during our stay) but we just turned the rads down to help stem the output of heat. Some furniture and fixtures could do with updating / replacing as a lot of it feels like it's on its way out or is just about to break but that's a minor point as we value cleanliness over all else and on that score we were happy.

Property is perfectly situated for access to Ambleside and rest of lakes avoiding the Ambleside jam of doom!
