If you wish to go further afield try an open top bus trip or take a scenic boat trip to Waterhead, Ambleside or Lakeside. For the more energetic a walk up to ’Orrest Head’ offers spectacular views over Lake Windermere. Bowness has a lively café culture, a wide selection of restaurants, bars, independent small shops and an Art Deco cinema.

Originating as a police station and jail in 1843 and extended in 1858 to include the courthouse. This sizeable property is warmly decorated throughout with a real homely feel and plenty of space for everyone to enjoy. The accommodation consists of a well-equipped family kitchen/breakfast room with a breakfast table and chairs and a traditional pulley maid for drying clothes should you need to. The comfy living room has plenty of seating for everyone including a Smart TV and living flame effect fire and a cosy reading snug area. The dining room has table and chairs to accommodate up to ten people, a Smart TV and a choice of games, and off this room is a small shower room. Outside to the front of the property is a small seating area with a picnic table to enjoy relaxing outside on warm sunny days.

Lovely and clean. Fully equipped kitchen and I mean fully equipped. Spent Christmas 2025 there with the family (10 of us). There is so much to do, boat trips, spa, shopping, restaurants, walks on the hills etc etc. Shops are all nearby too. We were greeted with a welcome pack and a Christmas tree was already set up. Beautiful place to stay, with Windermere being a stones throw away.

The Old Court House is a fantastic place to stay. It had everything we needed and more with a bonus of a little welcome pack. Bedrooms were all a great size with en suites in every room and really comfy beda. It’s just a short walk down to the shops, pubs, restaurants and the lake. There is a lovely Italian restaurant directly opposite and a little pub with restaurant just a couple of doors up. Would thoroughly recommend, we will be back.
