Guests say

Hury Lodge receives glowing praise for its stunning views, peaceful setting, and cosy, well-equipped accommodation. Guests consistently highlight the property's cleanliness, comfort, and dog-friendly features, as well as the warm welcome from the owners. The location is ideal for walking and exploring the surrounding countryside. While a few minor issues are mentioned, such as a low bedroom door and occasional maintenance points, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests returning for repeat stays.

Multiple reviews describe the cottage as clean, well-maintained, and tidy. Only one review mentions a minor issue with a smelly carpet and a small amount of mould, but this is noted as slight and did not detract from the overall impression.

The location is repeatedly praised for its tranquillity, beautiful views over the reservoir, and excellent walking opportunities. Guests appreciate the secluded setting and proximity to local attractions, with only positive comments about the surroundings.

Guests frequently mention the cottage as cosy, warm, and comfortable, with special mention of comfortable beds and a homely atmosphere. The only recurring negative is the low door into the double bedroom, which affected a few guests.

The cottage is described as well-equipped, with all necessary amenities provided. Dog-friendly features and secure gardens are highlighted. A few guests note the lack of Wi-Fi and a small kitchen countertop, but these are generally accepted as part of the rural experience.

Many guests mention thoughtful touches such as welcome gifts (cakes, milk, Prosecco, Buck’s Fizz, cava, party poppers, Christmas cake), but it should be noted that these are not guaranteed for every stay. The owners are described as friendly, helpful, and considerate.

About this property

A delightful, stone-built, semi-detached cottage situated in its own grounds in the peaceful and tranquil hamlet of Hury in the Baldersdale area, 10 miles from Barnard Castle. Set in beautiful surroundings, the property boasts first-class accommodation, offering a charming master bedroom with beamed ceiling, a modern fitted kitchen with full-length picture window and a warm, snug sitting room. With breathtaking views of the reservoir and surrounding countryside, this is a great place in which to unwind and escape the stresses of modern life. A host of scenic walks and nature trails can be enjoyed nearby, or visit Romaldkirk, with its superb award-winning pub. The historic Eggleston Hall and the ancient market town of Barnard Castle, with its impressive castle, museum and art exhibitions, are both within easy driving distance, making this a delightful holiday location to be enjoyed at any time of year.

Made up of a small cluster of hamlets and farm dwellings overlooking the reservoirs of Hury, Blackton and Balderhead, Baldersdale branches off Teesdale. Home to Hannah Hauxwell, this lovely settlement rose to fame in the 1970s when Hauxwell was featured on television for single-handedly running her farm from her home which had no running water. Now managed by Durham Wildlife Trust, 'Hannah's Meadow' is an attractive nature reserve. One of the most unspoilt villages in Teesdale – Romaldkirk – is close by and consists of pretty greens, old stone cottages, a beautiful old church and two pubs - one of which won the AA Pub of the Year award for England in 2003. The breathtaking Dales countryside provides some excellent walking and cycling routes whilst the cities of Durham and Newcastle are all within easy driving distance for more cosmopolitan activities.

Weather was mixed but we still found enjoyable walks with the dogs and coming back to our warm welcoming cottage was a perfect way to end the day. This is my fourth visit so what higher recommendation can you need.
