The market town of Barnard Castle is situated in the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale in County Durham. It stands on the site of an ancient Roman ford which crosses the river. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as 'Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century. The nearby Bowes Museum is well worth a visit and a wonderful way to spend a day wandering around this beautiful building and experiencing the fascinating exhibitions.

The cottage was incredibly comfortable, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made us feel right at home. Everything we needed was provided, and the well-equipped setup made our stay completely stress-free. Its peaceful location and charming surroundings added to the overall enjoyment of our visit. Very good shower and plenty of hot water. Thermostat set at appropriate level so cottage was always pleasantly warm. Very important that electrical goods - microwave, TV, cooker - have up-to-date and easy to follow instruction manuals available when usage problems arise. Super big fridge and separate freezer cabinet. Very amiable owner at hand. Overall, a very nice place to stay for my holiday.
