Known locally as ‘the gateway to The Cheviots’ Wooler is a delightful, historic market town on the banks of the River Till, one of the tributaries of the Tweed, nestling in the foothills of the Cheviots which form part of the Pennine Way. There is a good selection of hotels and eating places to enjoy including The Doddington Milk Bar, which offers an opportunity for you to dine for breakfast and lunch or indulge in one of their array of sweet treats and of course the famous Doddington Dairy ice cream. To the east is the magnificent coastline of Northumberland, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with great trips to be had to Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Seahouses harbour, or the birdwatcher’s paradise of The Farne Islands. Situated on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, Wooler is just a short drive away from the historic town of Alnwick with its famous Castle and Gardens, and the well-preserved Garrison town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Chillingham Castle with its ancient herd of wild white cattle and Coldstream, just over the Scottish border, are also a short drive away.

Excellent week at St Cuthbert’s Retreat. Great location on the High Street, plenty to do in the area and wonderful enclosed garden to let the dog into.

Unique and quirky cottage offering town centre location. We found it well equipped and great for local amenities. The only downside was the location was fairly busy at pub closing time as we have never stayed in a town before so we’re not used to it and our dogs were quite reactive. The town was very dog friendly and local shops were lovely and very friendly. The lack of windows took some getting used to but all part of the unusual property layout. The garden was lovely even in November and the owners were also friendly and welcoming. Bookstore was also great for book lovers. Got stocked up on JL Ross.
