About this property

Sitting in the picturesque Loftus in North Yorkshire is this lovely, terraced house of Lavender Cottage. Ideal for a family of four, this pet-friendly property rests close to the beach and the North York Moors National Park for plenty of outdoor activities, whilst providing contemporary amenities and a play area. At the front of the property you'll find a patio with outdoor seating to relax and watch the world go by with your morning coffee. Inside, a homely sitting room awaits with sumptuous seating and a wall-mounted TV, as well as a woodburning stove for colder nights. The kitchen/diner has been beautifully appointed with marble-effect worktops, built-in appliances to please all foodies, and a table for six guests to toast to your holiday retreat. On summer days, be sure to make the most of your private patio where you can unwind with a glass of wine on the terrace, dine al fresco, whilst the little ones enjoy the play area. Completing the ground floor is a shower room with a spacious walk-in shower, whilst upstairs you'll find the family bathroom to soak in the tub or shower over, with your towel warming on the heated rail. The first floor also has two lovely bedrooms, a double and a twin, both fitted with storage space, a TV, and homely touches. If you're hoping to explore North Yorkshire, Loftus is an ideal base to start your adventures, where dining options include The Loftus Club and The Tiger Inn pub, there are a selection of shops to stock up on essentials, and Loftus Leisure Centre for morning swims. The idyllic Skinningrove Beach is also close by and welcomes dogs, sandcastle makers, walkers, and swimmers all year-round. You'll also find Saltburn-by-the-Sea a short drive away with stunning cliffs overlooking the sandy beach where you can fish along the pier, play a game or two at Saltburn-by-the-Sea Golf Club, and wander Saltburn Gill Nature Reserve. The historic seaside town of Whitby has something for the whole family to enjoy, such as classic amusements along Whitby Beach, the historic Abbey ruins at the top of the 199 Steps with breath-taking views, and a selection of museums including the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. For a picture-postcard day out, head to the fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay, home to a sparkling coastline and the National Trust's Old Coastguard Station. However, if you're seeking unspoilt landscapes, the North York Moors is on your doorstep; ramble along a range of scenic routes, discover sandy coves to rest your feet, and historic locations such as Guisborough with the fascinating ruins of Guisborough Priory. You'll find a lovely home-from-home in North Yorkshire at Lavender Cottage.

The Yorkshire village of Loftus is 14 miles north of Whitby. It was once an alum mining village and has terraced residences, historic stone cottages, and big stone homes. Long and vibrant Main Street has stores, cafés, taverns, banks, and a beautiful town hall. Behind the main street is a great swimming pool. Loftus lies near Runswick Bay and Staithes, a favourite of artists. 4 miles north is the exquisite resort town of Saltburn with its golf club and lengthy pier. The North Yorkshire Moors are nearby, as is the Jurassic fossil seashore.

Quick call to Sykes and a man was there filling the hot tub very quickly but then we had to wait for it to warm up so couldn’t go in it the first night. The boiler had no pressure so I watched a YouTube video to see if I could top it up. Boiler kicked in and all was well. Had a lovely few days relaxing in the hot tub, visiting the local beaches and eating out. Neighbours very friendly and the dogs enjoyed it too.

It was well kept, appointed, and met all of our needs and expectations. We look forward to returning.

BUT, then we had a few problems which reading previous guests comments they also did and sadly they weren't rectified before our stay. The tv has no signal so you can only access apps or catch up if you can log in with your own account. The toaster tripped all the electrics, we only found the fuse box by chatting to the neighbors. The boiler was switched off so we had no heating to dry towels on the heated rails. The hot tub was set on the lowest temperature and couldn't be altered so it wasn't warm enough. There was no mirror or storage in the second bedroom (only a small bedside drawer unit). Plus unfortunately the rear garden was like a building site, clearly work in progress. We did try contacting the housekeeper who I received a text from on the day we arrived saying to contact her if we had any problems. I did this on day 2 and again on day 4 but both times had no response back. On day 5 I got in touch with Sykes direct who did get in touch with her and she rang me whilst we were on our way home. (We left a day early as we were so disappointed with our holiday). Apparently she was out of the country and didn't receive my messages! Why then did I receive hers on day 1 saying she was first point if contact! Hopefully now the issues will be delt with (too late for us but for future guests). With the help from Sykes the owners have gone some way to compensate us for this. We have stayed in many self catering cottages and have to say this is the first one we have had any issues with. Sykes are usually very good with their descriptions and ratings. Lavender cottage has the potential to be a lovely holiday let with the hot tub and beautiful garden for Al fresco dining/kids play area when it's finished. On a positive note, the neighbors are lovely, very friendly and helpful. There are some lovely places to visit and we did a couple of good walks from the cottage. We would recommend Mad Alices bar for drinks and also Kascane Cafe was very reasonable for food and drinks.
