A charming and comfortably-furnished 400-year old terraced stone cottage, just a short walk from the centre of Alston, the highest market town in England, and the centre of five historic Pennine routes. The cottage is traditional and welcoming, with exposed beams, an inglenook fireplace and a warming woodburner-effect gas stove, and is ideal for a romantic break. Alston retains its traditional character, including a selection of pubs with open fires and real ales just a short walk from the cottage. There are walks onto the moors from the cottage, and the Pennine Way passes through the town, which is also on the C2C Cycle Route. With plenty of places to visit within an hour by car, including Hadrian's Wall, Beamish Open Air Museum, Durham Cathedral and the Lake District, this is a superb Alston cottage for a relaxing break.
Surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, Alston is set in the North Pennines and is England's highest market town. This intriguing settlement boasts charming cobbled streets and was the filming location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Long associated with poets, writers and artists, the wonderful location of Alston still serves as an inspiration to the craftspeople that live and work there. There is a wide range of unusual, independent shops in the town, including quality crafts and galleries. Visitors can also take a ride on one of the lovingly restored steam and diesel engines that run through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley, whilst Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre makes a great family day out with its interactive exhibitions.

Val from start to finish of our stay was an amazing host. Setting is very pretty. Lots of great walks near by. Spar at the bottom of the road has a great butcher and deli. The gas fire was an added bonus as the weather had changed and got colder. If we had one gripe it would be the tv wasn't a smart tv for Netflix but that's personal preference. The TV is a great size. Will definitely try and get back in the Summer as it would be a great area.

Itâs a really cosy cottage, spotlessly clean and close to all amenities in the village. The owner, Val, is lovely and extremely easy to communicate with. She gave clear arrival instructions and really helpful local recommendations. The cottage was warm and cosy and lovely to come back to after long walks. Highly recommended.

She messaged me with the key code and things to do and go to the night before, so no stress when we got there. We actually met Val when we arrived which was nice. Cottage was clean, comfortable and well proportioned for 2 adults and a dog. Cottage is right in the middle of Alston and situated on a lovely lane which we walked every day with our dog. If you go down the lane to the bridge there is a little waterfall and you may even see 2 pigs in the field. We tried Jackâs the takeaway man in the square and it was delicious. He is only open from Wednesday. The Turks head is around the corner and has a friendly atmosphere and dogs are welcome. We did use the kitchen which is fully fitted with all the tools you need. Even though people have mentioned on there reviews about the back garden being not secure, our dog was fine, heâs a big dog but as long as you have them on a lead canât see were the issue is. Please take towels with you, but Val will tell you this on your message We found everyone very friendly and we would recommend you visit Kings cottage
