The Black Bull is a spacious and comfortable cottage with a homely feel, located in the heart of Appleby. It offers en-suite rooms, a well-equipped kitchen, and private parking, though space is tight. Guests appreciate the property's character and central location, with easy access to local amenities and attractions.
The property is generally clean, comparable to an old 2/3 star hotel. Some guests noted areas that could benefit from a more thorough cleaning, such as cobwebs and dust, but overall, the cleanliness is satisfactory.
The location is highly praised for being central in Appleby, with proximity to shops, pubs, and local attractions. The convenience of private parking is also noted, despite its restrictive size.
Guests find the property comfortable, with cosy sofas and beds, and ample space for families. The presence of en-suite rooms adds to the comfort level, though some guests experienced issues with heating and hot water.
The property is equipped with necessary facilities, including a well-stocked kitchen. However, there are mentions of maintenance issues such as non-working appliances and the need for TLC in areas like the back garden and utility room.
There are no specific mentions of gifts or special thoughtful touches provided by the hosts, so it is not possible to assess this category. As such, the score is set to null.

Once being the hotel to the neighbouring public house, it has served the local town and guests for centuries. You are instantly transported back in time once you are surrounded by many original features such as the exposed beams, flagged floors and doorways.
The local area is also steeped in history, just a few hundred yards from the front door at the top of Burougate is Appleby Castle, a 12th century keep, and in the opposite direction is St Lawrences Church on the banks of the River Eden, with elements dating back to the 12th century.
The property lies within the stunning Eden Valley with many quaint villages. Appleby is close to the course of a 268-mile National Trail, which passes by on its way from Middleton-in-Teesdale to nearby Dufton. With High Cup Nick and Dufton Pike on the trail and just a short drive away you have some amazing walks and adventures, while the Lake District National Park is less than 30 minutes away in car. You can take a trip on a lake cruiser or enjoy the epic scenery only found in the Lake District National Park.

A lovely big house that is a bit tired but has potential. It’s all pretty clean and compares with a typical old 2/3 star hotel in terms of furnishings and decor. It’s clean enough and ticks the boxes for facilities and location, and budget.Certainly has the makings of a more desirable property.Paring at the rear is very restrictive, do not attempt it if you are not a confident at parking. Especially reversing.

Had another lovely stay at the Black Bull, and am looking forward to staying again (this was our second visit). Plenty of room, with comfy sofas! Convenient location in the centre of town, close to various handy shops. Can recommend the sausage rolls and sausages from the deli/butchers over the road! The private parking out the back is very useful given the permit parking elsewhere in town.

We stayed for a family wedding at Ghyll Barn from Friday to Tuesday... My Uncle, Auntie, Nan, cousin William, Mum, her partner Ray and my husband Jae!All rooms are en-suite which is a rarity and very much appreciated.Facilities are comfortable and generous in that of space.Old and homely feeling throughout.Unfortunately the washing machine and dryer in the utility don't seem to be working. We all had a competition on who could find the best leg for 'Legless Peggy' who resides on the light draw string in the kitchen toilet. We left her with a cork leg.Heating... If you'd like the heating on constant flip the bottom flap down to reveal more buttons. Press the top right-hand button marked CH to move the marker on the right-hand side of the screen to ON or OFF when you want it constantly on or off.The only other (silly) suggestion we got from some on the second floor was a lift lol.Can highly recommend Crown & Cushion, as well as 7eventy1 Tandoori.Loved this house, thank you!
