About this property

Chic, contemporary holiday home with master king-size bedroom with flatscreen TV and en suite shower room. Twin room and large family shower room. Open plan lounge/dining area with flatscreen TV, kitchen with dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer and oven/hob. Door leading out to private deck area with quality garden furniture, BBQ area and outdoor hot tub covered by a cabana with low level lighting. Central heating and double glazing.. Calthwaite Hall is uniquely set on the footprint of the barns used for a historic dairy farm and accompanying country house and gardens, this truly magical setting mixes historic country living with contemporary sophistication. Calthwaite maintains the traditions of a Cumbrian village with the old style estate sandstone village with church, primary school and worker cottages. The historic, gothic hall is at the centre of the village yet cleverly maintains the feeling of a hidden hideaway with formal lawned grounds and ornamental ponds designed by William Sawrey Gilpin, historic listed features such as the Portuguese Sweet Chestnut Specimen tree, hidden folly and veteran trees where cuckoos can be heard. No wonder the Howard family (of Castle Howard fame) previously used this as a country residence.

A range of accommodation can be found at Calthwaite Hall to suit everyone including romantic micro-lodges, luxury country cottage and contemporary, cosy lodge style holiday homes. Whichever you choose enjoy a steamy, bubbling hot tub with views to the Cumbrian starry skies or soak up the sounds of the resident peacocks calling to each other alongside the gentle neighing of cute Falabella miniature horses.

Perfectly placed to easily access the popular areas of the central and northern lake district. Calthwaite Hall also makes for easy journeys up to the Scottish borders or amble across into the western Pennine foothills. Traditional market towns, historic Roman remains, isolated fells and stunning waterfalls are all a short drive away.. Staff were friendly and we enjoyed the hot tub plus the peacocks were gorgeous. It was a good base- we went to Aira Force and visited family in Carlisle. For what we paid we feel the lodge was a bit tired though. There are a few small things that could make it better that we have experienced staying at other places. However we realised that the whole estate is for sale so this could be why these little things are not being addressed. Little issues-Random glasses and cutlery, plus a ripped oven mitt. The lighting in hot tub didn’t work and the maintenance man said none of them had bulbs in due to them breaking when people place the lids down in the tubs. No instructions on how to work the heater in the lounge and we couldn’t change the timings for the heating as the boiler cupboard was locked (I think it was on constant though). Ripped netting and stains on the couch plus rust on some of the radiators. No paperwork on how to check out either- we went to the summer hut and the restaurant and then saw someone who said to leave the key in the kitchen. We also reported a sewage smell from the en-suite the night we arrived and was told it would be reported to maintenance. Nothing came of this. Overall we enjoyed our stay it was just small things that could make the whole experience better and seem more professional.
