About this property

The Haven is a charming 19th-century cottage tucked away in the peaceful village of Great Strickland near Askham, offering a wonderfully quiet bolthole for couples or solo travellers who want to switch off and enjoy the slower pace of rural Cumbria. Small but full of character, this thoughtfully arranged retreat makes the most of its hillside position, with far-reaching views towards the Pennines and a lovely sense of privacy. Step inside to find a practical, well-equipped kitchen/diner, complete with an oven, hob, microwave, fridge, kettle and toaster, everything you need for preparing simple meals after a day exploring the fells. Upstairs, the king-size bedroom has plenty of charm, framed by original low beams that give a gentle nod to the cottage’s age.

A smart shower room finishes the interior layout. Do note that the staircase leading to the bedroom is steep, more like a ship’s ladder, so it’s best suited to those comfortable with a quirky, traditional layout. Outside, the enclosed garden is a real asset, offering a peaceful perch to enjoy your morning brew while watching out for red squirrels, deer or the occasional buzzard overhead. With no passing traffic to disturb the quiet, it’s an easy place to switch off and enjoy your own little corner of countryside. When you’re ready to explore, Ullswater and the fringes of the Lake District National Park are just a short hop away, offering lakeside trails, cycling routes, and classic viewpoints.

Penrith provides shops and eateries, while Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere open up even more walking routes and waterside attractions. Blending traditional charm with a wonderfully tranquil setting, The Haven offers a restful base for discovering the beauty and heritage of Cumbria.

Askham is a small rural Nottinghamshire village just off the A57 and close to the A1. The village has a pub. Sherwood Forest is just 11 miles away, with the Robin Hood visitors centre providing wonderful woodland walks including to the renowned Major Oak tree, with picnic areas also available. The National Trust's Clumber Park has 3,800 acres of spectacular scenery where you can walk or cycle, gardens, and a lake with 200 species of birds. The Wetlands Waterfowl Reserve is seven miles away with 32 acres of fishing lakes and woodland, along with an exotic birds sanctuary and animals. The area offers galleries and museums, while the Roman city of Lincoln, 17 miles away, has a cathedral and castle, and historic Newark, 15 miles away, has two castles, frequent antiques fairs, a fine Georgian market square and a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants.
