About this property

Nestled in Ashover, a countryside village in Derbyshire, is this charming one-bedroom cottage, Cuckoo Nest. Enjoying far-reaching, rural views, a private decked area, a contemporary studio-style layout, and a well-positioned base, near the Peak District National Park, the cottage welcomes two guests, recommended for a romantic break. Delve into the well-equipped kitchen, with all expected appliances for a self-catering stay, before gathering around the dining table, with the sound of the TV on in the backdrop. On sunny days, venture outside and benefit from the private front garden, suitable for alfresco dining or perhaps an afternoon barbecue, whilst appreciating the sweeping vistas across the Derbyshire hills. As sleep calls, choose between the sofa bed, or climb the ladder up to the king-size bed, displaying picturesque, elevated glimpses towards Matlock. You'll also find a sleek shower room in the Cuckoo Nest, where you can refresh ahead of your adventure-filled itinerary. Before exploring the countryside, head into Ashover, where you’ll find three welcoming pubs, a local café, an ice cream shop, and Marsh Green Farm Shop, perfect for stocking up on local produce or to enjoy some breakfast. Within walking distance to Cuckoo Nest, you’ll find Matlock Farm Park, home to various animals, including alpacas and llamas, along with two cafés offering delicious home cooked meals. Recommended for outdoor enthusiasts, head to Lumsdale Waterfall and Peaks and Paddles Outdoor Adventure, offering canoeing trips and abseiling. Towards Matlock you'll find an array of amenities, including boutique shops, Mad Hatter tearoom and The Duke of Wellington pub, whilst activities to experience include tours of Peak District Mining Museum, strolls around Sparrow Park, visits to Matlock Bath Aquarium, and travels upon the Heights of Abraham cable car, offering high-rising views across the countryside landscape. Within proximity to the Peak District National Park, embark on a variety of walking trails and hikes, up to the likes of Cratcliffe, or perhaps head into Chesterfield and follow the Spital Trail, or follow the border of Wheeldon Mill Lock. Feel at one with nature at Cuckoo Nest.

Just five miles from Matlock, in the tranquil Amber Valley, is the little, rural community of Ashover. The village is home to a number of fine pubs, notably the Crispin Inn, one of the Peak District's oldest, and The Old Poets' Corner, which serves locally brewed Ashover ales. Located in the centre of the town, Hall Leys Park offers a magnificent location for a variety of leisure activities like bowling, tennis, and boating. The county town of Matlock, an ex-spa town, has a number of superb dining establishments, nice shopping, and an intriguing museum. With its owl maze, water gardens, natural paths, exhilarating rides, and cable car flights over the picturesque Matlock Gorge, Gulliver's Kingdom is a wonderful place to spend the day. Visit the exquisite Chatsworth House and Hardwick Hall, where the Cavendish family's history began, or explore the charming market town of Bakewell, which is well-known for its Bakewell pudding. You can also follow the High Peak Cycle Trail. There is undoubtedly a lot to see and do in this fantastic place.

We were really happy with our stay. It was clean, great view, great location, good recommendations and really friendly and accommodating hosts. We would stay again if in the area. Thank you!

For just a few £££'s more I could have had a detached 2/3 Bedroomed House/Cottage, whereas this property is Very Small, not sure how you would fit in a Cot as well? Facility wise it is a bit sparse. If you plan to Fry some food forget it as there is no extraction available, so I'd avoid that, also there is no Micro-Wave, which is strange these days. If you plan to stay for a week then be aware that there are no storage facilities for clothes or even for food, although you will probably be eating out? The Hot water for pot washing only last a couple of minutes before it goes cold. To watch TV you have to keep removing the ladder out of the way. The bedroom doesn't fit my description of a bedroom, it is basically a mattress on a loft floor, no cupboards or drawers or mirrors also very little headroom, about 2', so it's a "crawl" to get in and out of bed. The upper "bedroom" is not suitable for anyone that might have disabilities etc. due to having to climb a ladder to access the mattress. The lighting is very bright, so a Table Lamp would be helpful for nighttime. We never got to me the hosts, so I can't comment on that. I know this is a negative review, and I'm sorry to leave one, but people should be made aware of the limitations that they will encounter. For me this was booked on the "Spur of the Moment", so I guess I'm partially to blame for not reading the comments etc. If you are just doing a 1/2-night stay, then this would be ideal, but anything over, in my opinion, would need a bit of consideration.
