River Cottage is a charming, cosy retreat in a stunning riverside location, perfect for walkers and nature lovers seeking peace and beautiful views. Guests praise its homely feel, well-equipped kitchen, and proximity to scenic walks and friendly village pubs. The steep, cobbled path to the cottage is a challenge for some, but adds to its secluded charm. While most found the cottage clean and comfortable, a few noted maintenance and cleanliness issues. The owner is generally described as helpful and responsive, making for a welcoming stay overall.
Most guests found the cottage clean and welcoming, with several describing it as cosy and well-presented. However, a minority reported issues such as dust, cobwebs, musty smells, and occasional problems with damp, dog hair, or maintenance of the garden. These negative experiences were outweighed by positive comments, but do indicate some inconsistency.
The location is widely praised for its tranquillity, beautiful views, riverside setting, and proximity to excellent walks and village amenities. The steep access path is frequently mentioned as a challenge, but most guests felt the setting more than compensated for this.
Guests generally found the cottage warm, cosy, and comfortable, with particular appreciation for the log burner, beds, and peaceful atmosphere. A few noted issues with mattresses, damp, or the cottage being a bit small for larger groups, but overall comfort was rated highly.
The cottage is described as well-equipped, with a good kitchen, hot water, and thoughtful touches like walking guides. Some guests mentioned maintenance issues such as blocked toilets, lack of a freezer, or minor repairs needed, but these did not detract significantly from the overall experience.
The owner is frequently described as helpful and responsive, offering advice and local tips. Some guests appreciated welcome phone calls and local information packs. While gifts are not mentioned, the personal touches and communication were valued, though these cannot be guaranteed for every stay.
A lovely, traditional, stone-built property, River Cottage is the gable end of a row of quaint cottages situated on a steep hillside in the pretty village of Youlgreave, 4 miles from Bakewell. The cottage is full of charm and character with a delightful sitting room and a mature garden area with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Due to the exceptional location of this cottage, the only noise that you will hear is the sound of the river. A footpath leads from the cottage down to the Bradford Dale valley bottom where there are lovely riverside walks and numerous picnic spots, while Youlgreave's old pubs and magnificent church are just a short stroll away. An ideal romantic retreat from which to explore the beauty of the surrounding National Park, Bakewell, with its regular market, Matlock and the unmissable Chatsworth House.
Set in outstanding countryside, Youlgreave is an ancient village between the valleys of Lathkill Dale and Bradford Dale, two of the most stunning areas in the Peak District. However the it was in such a lovely location. We had a wonderful few days, just listening to bird song and the walking from the gate is just superb. We were blessed with amazing weather and spent a lot of time sat outside or laid on the lawn. I would suggest more detailed directions as it states it is the path opposite the pub car park when it is in fact a little further up. Another tip if you have a folding sack barrow take that as it saves trips. lol

It was very cosy and warm. The garden faces the river gorge below and is just beautiful. Youlgreave is a charming village and the accommodation is perfect for walkers. Lots of local circular walks. Hope to stay here again in the near future. Thanks so much
