Nestled between Matlock Bath and Matlock, you can take off in either direction and explore a wealth of amenities. The neighbouring town of Matlock Bath is sure to impress with the Matlock Bath Aquarium and Arcade, the Peak District Mining Musuem and the fantastic Gulliver’s World Theme Park. Derbyshire is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with walking, cycling, biking and even watersports available in abundance; why not tackle the summit of Bleaklow, known as the highest mountain in the Peak District, or for a more leisurely adventure, tackle the rapids at the Peaks and Paddles Outdoor Adventure. Lime Cottage sits in a fantastic region of Derbyshire, perfect for a holiday in any season.

Since the late 17th-century construction of the resort, Matlock and Matlock Bath, two prominent Peak District towns, have drawn tourists to the region. The Matlocks, which are located in the lovely wooded gorge of the River Derwent, provide a variety of stores, bars, and eateries in addition to a number of attractions like Gulliver's Kingdom and the Peak District Mining Museum. From the cable car that transports guests to the Heights of Abraham, a fantastic location for the whole family with its showcaves, nature walk, water gardens, and Owl Maze, tourists may take in magnificent views of the gorge. The High Peak Cycle Trail begins south of the town, while the National Tramway Museum at Crich is only a short drive away. The market town of Bakewell and Chatsworth House and Park lie to the north and shouldn't be missed!

SO WE DID! The side entrance (you use all the time) was a disgrace! Door, both side windows, sills & dustbin area were filthy. You will be pleased to know we left it like that! Inside there were 3 tall upside down wine glasses 1 had a big piece of glass broken out of it. I made a cup of tea using 1 of the large mustard coloured cups. A big chip on it, where people drink from. Naturally we left these as we found them too! Parking space (very difficult to maneuver into)is described "parking for 1 car if there are 2 vehicles the other may be left in lay-by across the road" No mention that to get to the cottage there is a steep hill 50-60 yards long then 50 steps to reach the cottage. Kitchen, dining area, & lounge have dark wood fitted floors at 2 points the level differed by about 2". We suggest these are highlighted by luminous tape along the edge to avoid people tripping over. The grill pan had no handle, when I pulled it out to do toast the grease on my fingers from under the pan was not very nice at all. Naturally I did as instructed & left things as we found them. Why the toilet was raised on a wooden pedestal we couldn't quite understand though. The shower was perfect temperature at first but suddenly changed to very hot, it had a mind of its own! What we paid for 2 nights we expected a better standard of cleanliness. 1st night we we're there we didn't realise ,the side light was on, when talking to gentleman who lives next-door he asked me if we can turn it off in future as it shines right into their room. This I think should be noted on information sheet for future guests. The bedding I have to say was beautiful & the view of the rocks from front room amazing. We spent a lot of time watching the rock climbers scaling them. Would we go back and stay in that cottage again? No! Would we recommend it? No!

Matlock and Matlock Bath are both quite run down but, nevertheless popular. However, for the amount that we paid, something a little better maintained would be expected. The shower was intermittent (constant temperature difficult to achieve) this was reported with a quick response from the owner. Didn't fully fix the problem. The wooden trim to the step up to the bath is broken and there is mould around the edge. No washing machine - this needs to be made EXPLICIT as the 'helpful things to bring' guide states “Clothes detergent - you may want to wash items whilst away.” Parking is a nightmare - a large family car doesn't really fit in the reserved space. Tried once and the clutch started smoking. The combination of the last 2 comments mean that this isn't really suitable for a family group with children for more than a couple of days. On busy days the lay-by opposite and the next one down are usually full. I ended up in a Pay and Display one evening. Be careful crossing the road…there are bikers zooming through from dawn 'til dusk. The kitchen is poorly equipped regarding pots, pans and tins etc. Largest pan not really big enough to cook a one pot meal for a family of 5. The cottage smelt musty and damp when we arrived although this smell eventually dissipated. There are noticeable places where the paper is coming off the walls. It hadn't been cleaned to a particularly high standard - cobwebs and dirt in many corners. The last few steps to the property are overgrown and have bits of shale on them, making them unsafe. The garden furniture was dirty and unusable. The beds were comfortable but the quilt covers have seen better days. Main bedroom TV doesn't work properly (signal keeps stopping). I wonder how long it has been since Sykes viewed this cottage to assess its suitability.
