The area has a history of lead, silver, and slate mining, dating back to the 17th century but today it is a renowned location for climbing, birdwatching, walking, and cycling, with famous mountain bike trails near Dolgellau, and a mountain bike centre at Llandegla. To dine out there is the New Inn, a traditional pub, which enjoys scenic views of the Snowdonia Mountain range, and a short drive will lead you to a well-stocked Post Office to stock up on the essentials. Visit the historic market town of Bala for an action-packed day, where you can take up climbing, abseiling, mountain biking, as well as canoeing and kayaking on the glacial lake; it is a wonderful beauty spot, with excellent fishing and a variety of water sports, or perhaps visit Lake Vyrnwy, which has an rspb centre and a sculpture park.
