With a wonderful beach just moments away, this spacious dog-friendly apartment is perfectly placed on the eastern side of the island, just outside Shanklin town. Ideal for families and able to accommodate up to six guests, it offers an easy, relaxed base for coastal escapes. Guests can also now enjoy the added flexibility of midweek check-ins, and for those travelling over the water, ferry crossings are often cheaper midweek, making it even simpler to plan a well-timed getaway.
The excellent nearby beach delivers a classic British seaside feel and is accessed via steps from the cliff path close to the property, or from the esplanades of both Shanklin and Sandown. Tucked slightly away from the main resorts, it tends to be quieter even in peak season, making it a peaceful spot for days on the sand. Its shallow, clear waters are perfect for surfing, kayaking or paddleboarding, with an instructional school on hand for all ages and abilities. Beach hut hire, benches along the sea wall, and a friendly café with a barbecue area all add to the charm, while the wide, flat sea wall walk between Sandown and Shanklin is lovely when the tide is in.
Beyond the beach, Shanklin itself offers a lively mix of cafés, bars, shops and restaurants. The picturesque old village is famously dotted with thatched pubs, cosy tea rooms, craft shops and traditional seaside treats. Down on the esplanade, amusements, crazy golf and waterfront eateries provide plenty of classic holiday entertainment.
Neighbouring Sandown brings its own traditional resort feel with a pier, amusements and pitch and putt, alongside the Isle of Wight Zoo and Dinosaur Isle. Further afield, the island is rich with attractions—from The Needles and Alum Bay in the west, to Osborne House near Cowes, to the nostalgic fun of Blackgang Chine in the south. This is a mixed reviews because it was bitter sweet. First impression of the house wasn’t that good because i didn’t realise it was a basement conversion so was very confused on how to find the door. It’s a 3 storey building basically. However it has ample space, especially the kitchen and garden. The shower/bathroom was a great size and powerful shower always helps relaxation. Area was great as I have family there, proximity to amenities was great as well. Everything within walking distance. Based on those things alone I would go again. The bad bits are what make me doubt I’d use Portman house again or even recon it to others is the overwhelming damp and allergens in the flat. Especially the bunk room and living room. It’s too much, my 2 boys (one older and one younger) were unwell with it as soon as we entered. Between damp smelling and other animals and other animal hair on things, old pillows on the children’s beds harbouring soo much dust through the old torn polyester casing was terrible. The red eyes, itchy nose, sneezes and coughs and an abundance only snot ruined the nighttime’s. I ended up taking sheets off the adult bed and found hair on the mattress protector so had to take that off too and lie inside the duvet and my wee boy lie on a big towel on the bed itself to reduce the allergens. Which worked better from mid holiday. The washing machine had severe mould in it, I tried my best to clean it to use it but the stains are stuck hard and that is the only bits I seen in the drum, I didn’t open the drawer! I cut my toe in the broken floor tiles next to the shower that were covered up. I binned most of the old food items that were left and dated back to 2023, condiments as said to be used by families on holiday. Quite disgusting. It was quiet enough at night but I had to jam the gate to stop it banging in the wind all night which is next to the adult bed. The touches of bacon and eggs and bread was nice but doesn’t take away the struggles with the allergies inside the flat. Or the smells of damp. So based on all of that it would depend if you are allergic to things like that the same as my family is or if that doesn’t bother you.

This flat was spacious, clean, close by to the beach, lovely coastal walks and great cafe’s along the coastal footpaths. The property had everything we needed and more for our holiday and we felt at home during our stay. The garden was enclosed which helped with our dog and we had somewhere to keep our paddle boards so we didn’t have to keep blowing them up on the beach. The owners thought of everything, lots of information on the local area, they catered for our dog with a towel, blanket, and treats and treats for our children too. SO kind.Shanklin is a great beach, also Sandown and Ryde which were only a few minutes away in the car. We found areas that were dog friendly too which was wonderful. We had a great stay and will definitely consider returning here too.
