Round Island Cottage at The Lizard offers a unique and memorable stay in a stunning coastal location. Guests consistently praise the beautiful setting, comfortable and spacious accommodation, and the well-equipped interiors. The property is ideal for families and groups, with many enjoying the proximity to coastal walks and the novelty of staying at a working lighthouse. While a few minor maintenance issues and the occasional sound of the fog horn are mentioned, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests eager to return.
Most guests found the property very clean and well-presented, with only a few isolated comments about minor issues such as a blood spot on bedding or slightly damp towels. The majority of reviews highlight high standards of cleanliness.
The location is widely regarded as exceptional, with guests loving the coastal views, direct access to walks, and the unique experience of staying at a lighthouse. Some mention the fog horn and limited sea views, but these do not detract from the overall appeal.
Guests frequently comment on the comfort of the beds and the spaciousness of the cottage. The property is described as warm, welcoming, and ideal for families, with only rare mentions of minor discomforts.
The cottage is generally well-equipped, with modern kitchens and bathrooms, but some guests noted maintenance issues such as a broken microwave, washing machine problems, and minor wear and tear. Lack of WiFi and occasional water pressure issues were also mentioned.
Many guests appreciated the welcome hampers and personal touches, such as gluten-free treats and follow-up calls from the housekeeper. However, as these gifts are not guaranteed for every stay, guests should not expect them as standard.

In association with Trinity House, we are pleased to present Round Island at Lizard Lighthouse. Located on the southern-most tip of mainland Britain, the six adjacent cottages of Lizard Lighthouse present guests with dazzling scenery and coastal walks right from the doorstep. Rare and beautiful flora and fauna make this cliff top location particularly special.
The largest of six former lighthouse keepers' cottages, Round Island is an ideal choice for a unique holiday with family or friends. The dog friendly accommodation includes a general entrance hall leading to the modern and fully equipped kitchen/breakfast room; a separate dining room with sea views; a cosy sitting room with more sea views and a large comfy corner sofa set around a feature fireplace and an electric living flame fire. The modern family bathroom is also located on the ground floor, along with two of the four bedrooms, one of which has an en-suite shower room, and there is an additional cloakroom/wc. The two first floor bedrooms both have sea views and include a king-size and a twin room.
Outside, the property enjoys its own enclosed courtyard and allocated parking.
Lizard Lighthouse is a fully working lighthouse, first established in 1619. The distinctive two white towers that it is known for today were built in 1751 by private entrepreneur Thomas Fonnereau, and first lit on 22 August of that year. Trinity House gained control of the lights in 1771 and continues to look after its operation to this day. It became electrified in 1924 and then fully automated in 1998. It has a 26 mile light range and an automatic 3 mile fog signal if conditions are misty.
The nearby Lizard Village provides shops, restaurants and a friendly pub only ¼ mile away. There are an abundance of other small seaside towns and beaches to explore including St Michael's Mount, St. Ives, Mousehold, Newlyn, Penzance and The Helford River.
Additional Information:
This is an operational lighthouse with an automatic, electric fog signal. During occasional periods of fog and mist, ear plugs are provided for your comfort.
Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome (small additional charge).
Travel cot and highchair available on request.
Please note, WiFi is not available at this property and there is very limited mobile signal.
Guests should be aware that the lighthouses and equipment need regular and sometimes emergency maintenance. Therefore visits by maintenance staff may occur at any time during the year. However, staff will do their best to ensure guest privacy at all times.
Access roads to the lighthouse site are narrow with limited passing places and, dependent on the season and site, there is the possibility of overhanging vegetation due to cutting restrictions during bird breeding seasons or other environmental reasons.
Guests are reminded they are renting a heritage building, therefore certain features such as steps, stairs and floor levels may not comply with that of a modern building. As such, we would advise guests to acquaint themselves with the premises on arrival and exercise caution accordingly.
A barbecue is not provided, however guests are welcome to bring their own, subject to adhering to the safety precautions set out in the arrival information.
Sorry, no fireworks, drones or remote controlled flying equipment are permitted.
Due to its location and surroundings, please ensure that children are supervised at all times whilst at this property.

The location was great and staying in a working lighthouse keepers cottage was memorable for all. Overall it served our purpose there but were some parts of maintenance and housekeeping that had been overlooked and would be an easy fix.

It’s a lovely property with heaps of character and a great size for a larger group. The courtyard area is secure which also makes it a great space for our 4 legged member of the family. Thank you.
