Guests say

May Cottage in Pentewan, Cornwall, is a well-received holiday rental with a charming garden and a location praised for its proximity to the beach and local amenities. Guests have enjoyed the well-equipped kitchen, cosy wood burner, and comfortable beds. The property has been described as homely, clean, and suitable for families, with many expressing a desire to return.

Cleanliness has been generally well-regarded, with several guests finding the cottage to be clean and welcoming. However, there have been a few mentions of areas needing more attention, such as dust build-up and a blocked kitchen sink on arrival, which slightly lowers the score.

The location of May Cottage is highly praised for its close proximity to the beach, local pub, and attractions like the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Its position in a quiet village with easy access to walking trails adds to its appeal.

Guests have found the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy, especially with the wood burner. However, some guests mentioned that the lounge chairs were uncomfortable, and there were comments about dampness in the bedrooms, which suggests room for improvement in overall comfort.

The cottage is well-equipped with necessary amenities and a kitchen that guests found satisfactory. Nonetheless, there were reports of maintenance issues such as a broken washing machine door and a leak, indicating that some facilities require attention.

Many guests were delighted by the thoughtful touches, such as the welcome pack with scones, jam, and cream. While these gestures were appreciated, it is important to note that such gifts are a courtesy and may not be provided with every stay.

About this property

May Cottage is a terraced stone cottage in the pretty hamlet of Pentewan. Stunning garden and a wood burning stove are a couple of the highlights of this cottage suitable for family or friends to enjoy. Entry is through a stable door into the comfortable living room with lots of books, games and DVDs for those wet days or cosy evenings. The kitchen is well equipped and includes a breakfast table. There are three bedrooms on the first floor with a family bathroom. Separated from the cottage by a quiet lane are two decking areas equipped with garden furniture and a large garden with enchanting views across the valley.

There is ample parking for two cars. A 5 minute walk takes you to Pentewan beach, an adventure playground among bathers and water sport enthusiasts and a firm favourite among locals since it is so large it rarely gets crowded. For walkers and cyclists, there is the Pentewan Valley Trail, a 4 km inland road-free path through beautiful woodland, and the scenic coastal footpath which stretches in either direction over rugged cliff tops, and hidden coves. Unspoilt and uncommercialised, the village itself provides a convenience store, pub and well-reputed bar/restaurant. The picturesque fishing village of Mevagissey, which still boasts a working harbour and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are within 5 miles (both linked to Pentewan via a cycle path) and the world famous Eden Project is less than 20 minutes by car.

Nestled in a sheltered valley along a quiet row of traditional cottages and away from the main thoroughfare, May Cottage is truly a cosy haven by the sea and an excellent choice for breaks at anytime of year

Pentewan is a delightful coastal village set back from the sandy expanse of Pentewan Beach. The village shop and pub draw visitors from far and wide, while the beach is good for children. The coastal path passes through the village and as it climbs up the cliffside towards Mevagissey, the views across the bay toward Devon in the far distance are breathtaking. Good cycle paths pass close by the village, there is a great river close by for fishing enthusiasts, the Lost Gardens of Heligan are just a short walk away, and the historic and scenic Charlestown harbour is also close by. The nearby fishing village of Mevagissey offers many restaurants and fresh harbour fish, while the Eden Project is within easy reach and well worth a visit.

The cottage itself is very dark downstairs and cold and the electric heaters do not provide enough heat. The sofa in the front room is really uncomfortable so we ended up spending most of our time upstairs. The cottage is stocked with all of the necessities and we did not need to get any other household items. It was a lovely touch to have scones and milk in the fridge which was not expected! The kitchen has a washer/dryer and a dishwasher which is really handy as who wants to be washing up on holiday! The bedrooms were decorated well however had damp in them which you could see on the ceiling and smell which was not nice at all. The bathroom was lovely and was the warmest room in the house as the little radiator in there came on at times. The garden outside was large and has two areas to sit out on. The furniture on the second level has seen better days and we were constantly having to hit away wasps which we think were coming from the garden next door. It would be good to put up a catcher outside. Overall our holiday was wonderful but we would not recommend nor stay at May cottage again. If you are a bit superstitious the cottage definitely has “that feeling”. We were also told by the house next door that the cottage is up for sale so not sure what will happen to everyone’s booked holidays.

Parking a bonus. Nice and clean. Only one complaint is that the upstairs bathroom basin was a tad small and the hot water was a mere trickle, thats when it got hot, after about 10 minutes.
