At the foot of the beautiful Sterridge Valley, in one of Devon’s prettiest villages, this attractive holiday property enjoys a high degree of comfort and a quiet, relaxing ambience. Frequent winner of Best Kept Village and Britain in Bloom, Berrynarbor has a Community PO/shop, ancient church and a pub within a 10 minute walk.
It has little through traffic yet is just 2 miles from Exmoor and Combe Martin’s beach, rock pools and choice of restaurants, and 4 miles from Ilfracombe’s spectacular theatre, indoor pool and golf course. It is surrounded by some of the most dramatic coastal and moorland scenery in England and there are miles of marked foot and bridle paths and cycle ways.
Woolacombe’s 3 mile long, clean, sandy beach is just 8 miles away, and Barnstaple’s traditional pannier markets, leisure centre and indoor tennis courts are a 20-minute drive. A scenic drive leads to Lynton and Lynmouth, connected by a unique water driven cliff railway. Clovelly and the north Cornish villages are easily accessible. Access to the Southwest Coastal Path is within walking distance of The Shippen Cottage. Community PO/shop and pub 0.5 miles.

For me, The Shippen was the perfect base for a peaceful break in beautiful North Devon. It has a cosy, homelike feel to it - lovely to return to after a day walking or sightseeing - set amongst ancient trees and a handful of other pretty cottages. There is a charming view from the living room, looking out over the valley and the picture-perfect village, to the green, rolling hills beyond, where cattle and sheep graze. The Shippen is a small cottage apartment, but uses its space well. The area that includes the living room, dining table and kitchen has been arranged such that each of those functions is usable without encroaching on the other. The kitchen occupies a long wall, so it's user friendly and well equipped. The bathroom contains an excellent and surprising large shower. The bedroom is comfortable and pleasant with plenty of storage (well supplied with hangers, which isn't always the case).The small, outdoor sitting area is an inspired addition. Great to sit and read with the sounds of nature all around. It has a roof, so that sitting out listening to the soothing patter of rain is also an option.The surroundings are extremely peaceful. You rarely hear a vehicle, so it is the birds, the wind in the trees and the distant pealing of church bells that you will hear. At night, tawny owls can be heard from the nearby woods.The village is one of the prettiest in the area, with a friendly and useful village shop and beautiful old pub serving good beers and great food.The general area is all green, rolling hills, dramatic coastal views and charming towns and villages.Finally, the owners of The Shippen, Ann and Brian are extremely welcoming and helpful. That said they are never intrusive, lending support and advice where necessary. I had car issues during my stay and they could not have been kinder or readier to help where they could.I could not recommend The Shippen too highly.
