Guests say

Chapel Cottage in Devon is highly praised for its cosy atmosphere, tasteful decor, and excellent location near the coast and pub. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, secure garden, and thoughtful touches like a cream tea on arrival. While some minor issues are mentioned, such as the desire for a downstairs toilet and a refresh in places, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many guests planning to return.

Guests consistently describe the cottage as clean and well-maintained, with several reviews highlighting its immaculate condition. The presence of a cream tea on arrival suggests a welcoming and tidy environment.

The cottage's location is frequently commended for its proximity to the coast, walking opportunities, and a friendly local pub. The peaceful setting and ease of access to nearby attractions contribute to its high rating.

Comfort is a strong point for Chapel Cottage, with guests finding it spacious and well-equipped. Some mention the warmth of the Rayburn and the cosiness of the living areas, although a few note that a mattress could be firmer and the heat at night could be excessive.

The cottage is praised for its facilities, including a well-stocked kitchen and utility room. However, some guests suggest improvements such as a downstairs toilet, better mattresses, and fans for warmer nights, which slightly affect the score.

Many reviews express gratitude for the thoughtful touches, such as decorations, treats, and a cream tea on arrival. While these gestures are appreciated, it is noted that such extras are a bonus and may vary with each stay.

About this property

Chapel Cottage is an welcoming period cottage resting in Welcombe, Devon. Offering close access to the beach, an enclosed garden, and a warming woodburning stove, it serves as an excellent base for families or groups seeking a relaxing retreat in this striking coastal region. Turning into the quiet heart of Welcombe village, you draw up beside Chapel Cottage and take in its characterful stone exterior, the building sitting calmly beside an old chapel that has long shaped this corner of the hamlet. Only a short wander along the lane lies a beautifully preserved thatched pub that has welcomed locals for generations, offering an immediate sense of village life shaped by tradition.

Step down the small flight of stone steps to reach the open porch and enter the porch hall where coats and walking boots can be left behind before exploring the rooms within. Move into the sitting room where tiled flooring guides you toward the woodburning stove. Two sofas, a soft rug and a pair of armchairs gather around its warm glow, creating a welcoming setting to unwind after a day on the coast. Switch on the TV and DVD player for an easy evening or simply relax as the firelight flickers across the room and the calm of the hamlet settles in around you.

Continue into the big farmhouse style kitchen and dining room where beams stretch overhead and the tiled flooring cools gently beneath your feet. As you walk across the room the gentle warmth from the Rayburn fills the air, offering an inviting backdrop for preparing supper using the electric cooker or microwave. The dining table is the natural spot to pause and plan the next day's adventures or share breakfast before heading out. The adjoining utility room makes it simple to manage sandy clothes or muddy walking gear thanks to the washing machine, tumble dryer and helpful storage. Climb the stairs from the hall, where a stairgate is available if needed, and explore the four tranquil bedrooms.

Each one feels light and welcoming, with arched mullioned windows catching the daylight and casting subtle patterns across the walls. Choose between two double rooms or make use of one of the two twin rooms, each offering a restful space to retreat to after a day beside the sea. Refresh in the bathroom with its bath and shower over, or use the additional shower room, both serving the floor with everything you need to begin or end the day feeling ready. Step out to the enclosed rear garden where you can enjoy a morning drink, sit with a book or let the dogs explore safely.

From here you can wander to the ancient thatched pub or follow the scenic valley path that eventually leads toward Welcombe Mouth, where cliffs, rock pools and sweeping skies reward those who make the journey. Beyond the village, Hartland Abbey offers a memorable day of history with elegant interiors, woodland paths and gardens shaped by generations. Bude provides a lively coastal outing with a sandy beach, independent shops and an inviting sea pool carved into the rocks for a refreshing swim. Clovelly promises a unique experience as you descend its steep cobbled street toward a picture-perfect harbour framed by sweeping views of the water.

Chapel Cottage provides a characterful base from which to explore the dramatic coastline, heritage sites and scenic walks that define this special corner of Devon.

A pretty country village just one mile from the high cliffs, rocky coves and golden sands of the north Devon/Cornwall coast, as well as the beach at Welcombe Mouth with its sand, rocks, and some fabulous waves to ride.

Very quaint and cozy home from home. Loved the working Rayburn in the kitchen. Gave off a welcome warmth all the time. I would recommend staying here. Thanks for having us.

Spacious and clean Brilliant for families and dogs, great location on the Devon / Cornwall boarder - loads to do close by, enclosed garden, and extremely handy pub a one minute stroll / we ate there three times - freshly cooked, so be prepared to wait - it’s not fast food - its delish! Despite this, very quiet on an evening. Off road parking for two cars. Two fridges, to store the essentials- Sainsbury’s deliver here too. Co-op 10 min drive, many walks on door step too.

The cottage is a longer walk from the beach than we had imagined, and the road down is very narrow, but a great location, next to the Old Smithy Inn, a few hundred yards away. We went for a meal there on our first night there, but unfortunately, we think they forgot our order, and we waited 1hr 15min for the food to come, but it was delicious when it came. We went back on the Thursday evening for their Folk Night, which was wonderful, and great end to our weeks holiday. Unfortunately, the rusty pub sign was right outside my bedroom window, and made the most incredible squeaking noise when the wind blew, so some nights I really struggled to get off to sleep. The cottage is very well equipped, with plenty of saucepans, cutlery & crockery etc. Dish washer tablets, dish clothes, oven gloves & 1 tea towel were provided, and there was nothing we needed that wasn't there. Beds were very comfortable, and lovely bedding, though apparently the front double bed was very creaky when you turned over! LOL Plenty of books, games, DVD's etc to borrow, with the front room being very cosy on a VERY cold June night!!! The only disappointment, was with the small garden, the grass was overgrow, and badly needed mowing, and the flower borders were very overgrown, all be it with lovely shrubs etc. The cast iron chairs & cushions have seen better days too. We visited Morwenstow, where is the most delightful Tea Rooms at The Old Rectory. Bude was another great find, and had amazing fish & chips at Life's a Beach, on Summerleaze Beach, and browsed the shops in the town. Widemouth Bay, Crackington Haven & Clovelly are also well worth a visit. We had 2 amazing meals at The New Inn in Kilkhampton, which is the closest village to the cottage, the Sunday lunch is to die for, and so reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone,& would be happy to make a return visit, but would hope that the garden had been sorted and the pub sign tied up to stop it being so annoying!
