Guests say

Tollgate Cottage is a charming and well-equipped holiday home, praised for its cosy atmosphere, cleanliness, and excellent access to local attractions, nature reserves, and dog-friendly walks. Guests appreciate the proximity to a welcoming pub and the beautiful views over the marshes. While the location next to the A12 offers convenience for exploring the area, some guests note that traffic noise can be noticeable, especially in the garden and front rooms. Overall, the cottage provides a comfortable base for a relaxing stay in Suffolk, with thoughtful touches and a warm welcome.

Most guests found the cottage clean and tidy, with several repeat visitors highlighting its cleanliness. However, a few mentioned issues such as dirty curtains and tired furniture, suggesting occasional lapses.

The cottage is ideally situated for exploring the coast, local towns, and nature reserves, with excellent walks and a pub nearby. The main drawback is its position next to the busy A12, which brings some traffic noise.

Guests generally found the cottage comfortable and cosy, with well-equipped rooms and good heating. Some noted minor issues with beds and noise from the road affecting sleep in certain rooms.

The cottage is well-equipped for self-catering and dog-friendly stays, with secure gardens and ample parking. Some maintenance issues were mentioned, such as worn furniture, a makeshift shower head fix, and a lack of mirrors or clear instructions for appliances.

Several guests appreciated welcome packs including wine, biscuits, and dog treats, though these are not guaranteed. The presence of local information and small touches was noted, but some guests wished for more comprehensive guides and instructions.

It is tucked away alongside the A12 which runs the length of the Suffolk Heritage Coast making it the ideal spot for those wishing to explore this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In the village you will find a popular pub and walks including those by the famous church. The legend of the Black Shuck, a ghostly black dog, dates back to 1577 and has been immortalised in songs and folk legend. The church itself is an incredible structure, overlooking the Blyth Valley.

Public transport is superb here and you can get into the ever popular Southwold to enjoy all the quintessential town has to offer with ease. From its independent shops, brightly coloured beach huts and traditional pier, it’s easy to see why this coastal town is a holiday hot spot all year round. Walberswick is also an excellent must see during your visit. Crabbing here is the sport of choice and it will keep kids entertained all day. All you need is a line, a bucket and bacon (we hear smoked bacon is the preferred kind!).

This is also a dog friendly area with endless woodland and beach walks. A trip to Dunwich and the woods are highly recommended. With a much needed pub at the end of the route this is a destination ideal for both summer and winter getaways. RSPB Minsmere is also close by with incredible sighting of rare species reported by birdwatchers. Beach 3 miles. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 50 yards.

At the house we would have liked more info about the area and places to visit instead of looking at comments and recommendations in the Guest comment book, nearest shops, other eating establishments apart from the White Heart and instructions on operating tv and heating would help.We could have done some more detailed research via Google. In the cottage there we’re very few mirrors and the hairdryer needed a socket by a mirror in order to blow dry hair.
