We liked what we found. It is an ideal base from which to explore the lovely Forest of Dean. The solicitous owners were concerned for our comfort and were quick to respond to our request for a bit more warmth. The room by which we entered was but sparsely furnished but would make an ideal breakfast room or place to relax on a sunny but cool day outside. The garden we would best describe as interesting, immaculate it is not but perhaps appropriate for it's rural setting. With no freezer or dishwasher we can't quite stretch to a five star rating but nevertheless were captivated by this historic and interesting property.

It is a really comfort cottage with everything you need for a relaxing break. We had a really enjoyable two week stay and we were sad to have to leave at the end of it. Luka and Lucille have put a lot of effort into making a The Old Lodge a perfect getaway. As well as being an ideal place to just chill out, there are lots of things to do within the area. There are a number of public foot paths to explore, castles, wildlife parks and museums just a short drive away.

On arrival we struggled to find the key safe and when we did you needed to be tall to access it (hubby is 5ft8" and could barely see the number and needed a torch). The garden is rather unloved and overgrown which is a shame as it could beautiful - grass is mown but that's about it. The entrance hall/summer room could be made lovely but all there was was a single chair and a small table so it is very stark - could do with a decent set of comfy chairs t o sit and enjoy the lovely view. The kitchen was fine in appearance but as self-caterers we found it under equipped - very few utensils and only a small number of small pans and not much cutlery. The fridge was advertised as a fridge with freezer compartment - but it didn't have one and we had brought quite a bit of frozen food with us. The property does not have a washing machine and no outside facility for drying. As outdoor folk we found this a drawback - admittedly it doesn't say on the decsription but we have never stayed in one that didn't have a washing machine. There is plenty of space to put one. The king-size bed was very comfortable and the shower nice and hot. Hubby would have appreciated a light over the sink for shaving. And a light over the shower would be nice. The lounge has a woodburning stove but it was hard to light (as stated in the cottage handbook) and there were no extra firelighters or kindling after our first attempt and no indication in the handbook as to where we might buy more. It would have been nice to be able to control the central heating ourselves but you have to message the owner for them to do it which we found a bit demeaning. There is a fair bit of not very well done DIY especially in the bathroom. All in all - the cottage could be fabulous but needs a bit of work
