Guests say

Doward Farm is a characterful, spacious farmhouse with a well-equipped kitchen, suitable for large gatherings. It's set in a beautiful countryside location, ideal for walking and enjoying the outdoors. The property has a charming, quirky atmosphere, though it would benefit from a thorough cleaning and some maintenance.

Guests have noted the need for a deeper clean, mentioning cobwebs, grime, and a general sense of grubbiness. The main thoroughfares and linen were clean, but overall improvements are needed.

The property is praised for its countryside location, with easy access to walking trails and forest parks in the scenic Wye Valley, making it a good choice for nature lovers.

The farmhouse offers good size bedrooms and a log fire, creating a cosy environment. However, the sitting room is not large enough for all guests, and some furnishings are less than perfect.

While the kitchen is well-stocked, there are safety concerns with abandoned vehicles and clutter. The communal spaces are limited, and there are oddities in the bathrooms. Maintenance is needed to enhance the facilities.

There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the hosts. Therefore, this category cannot be scored.

Let’s be clear. You get what you pay for. This property offers a low price compared to many other properties catering for similar numbers. What you get for that price is a characterful farmhouse, good size bedrooms, a log fire in the sitting room and a well stocked kitchen with equipment and crockery to suit a large gathering. The sitting room wasn’t big enough to seat all 15 of us, but it was perfect for 8 adults while the kids spread out across the house playing hide and seek. They never sit still anyway.Outside, there’s parking for around five vehicles and you get a countryside location with walking and forest parks nearby. Yes, the décor is old and the furnishings faded, but its quirky and fun. The only negative which is easily fixed, is the place needs a deep clean. On the surface it looked good enough, there’d clearly been a wipe round and tidy up, but there are plenty of cobwebs in corners and kitchen cupboards and grime on window ledges and tiles - we felt the need to clean the kitchens and bathroom more thoroughly before using. For what we paid, it provided handy accommodation for four families at our annual get together and we had a great time. If you’re a property snob, though, give it a miss and pay more elsewhere.

How to sum up this place!? The Wye Valley is beautiful; the cottage is madness. If this is your house - complete with rusted cars, ************ garden gnomes, missing bathroom walls, exposed nails, a very strong smell of oil for the cooker and a clothes moth infestation - it probably wouldn't be my first thought to rent it out (thankfully for not too much). The person on the phone who arranged check in was lovely, and the cleaner had done a great job with the main thoroughfares and linen, but it felt hard to relax in this property due to the general grubbiness and chaotic set up. For a house with so many bedrooms, there also isn't a good communal space to all be in together - the sofa area is for 6 when the property takes 16 people. Thankfully the weather was nice so we could hang out outside in the evenings, though we were warned not to touch anything, particularly the cars as some of them might fall apart. It was a very useful last resort for our bank holiday get together, close to beautiful walks, but I think everybody was sadly just relieved to be out of the house with our children.

The house is a quaint old farmhouse with some interesting features. However there are several issues of safety about the place. There are abandoned vehicles down the driveway and one in the turning circle. In the courtyard which had not been swept there were 3 BBQ that were covered in leaves etc and one with nettles growing over it. There wax a full length ladder up against the house as well as parts of scaffolding against a wall. There was a pile of clippings in a corner. The "orchard" had scrap items in it and barbed wire round the trees .In the kitchen the light switch is behind the fridge freezer. There are several areas that could do with a clean. The black bin and the recycling bin were full and difficult to get too. I feel that this property should be taken off the site untill considerable improvements are made .
