About this property

Nestled in the heart of Ludlow, a market town in Shropshire is The Ferns, a delightful, detached three-bedroom cottage. Sympathetically restored, maintaining some of its original features, The Ferns is a homely base for a family break, well-positioned near a hub of amenities, attractions, and the Shropshire Hills AONB; five guests are welcome. Park up on the private driveway or make use of the garage, before stepping indoors to the inviting hallway. Be welcomed into the contemporary kitchen/diner, complete with state-of-the-art appliances and a breakfast bar to ease your self-catered stay. Prepare meals before gathering in the dining room, oozing a traditional feel with a feature fireplace, seating for four, and antique furniture. If you'd prefer an alfresco affair, the rear garden is both private and enclosed, making it the ideal spot to dine, unwind and socialise, before returning indoors to the sitting room, where you can relax in front of the woodburning stove, with the Smart TV for entertainment. As the night unfolds, climb up the wooden staircase and reach three well-appointed bedrooms, including two doubles and a single; all are serviced by a spacious family bathroom. Awaken to a refreshing shower ahead of a day of exploration, firstly touring Ludlow, its independent shops, convenience stores, and delicious eateries, a haven for foodies; The French Pantry, Bistro 7, and Parkway Tasca Bar are all popular choices. Once you're refuelled, take a tour of Ludlow Castle and its medieval ruins, hike through Whitcliffe Common Nature Reserve, and enjoy riverside vistas alongside River Teme, before heading north, with the chance to trek through Rectory Wood, Carding Mill Valley, and the moorlands of the Long Mynd. The bustling city of Hereford is worth a visit, where you can purchase some local produce at the Museum of Cider, discover the stunning exterior of Hereford Cathedral, or even attend a race day at Ludlow Racecourse. Round off your travels in Shrewsbury, brimming with attractions, including the Shrewsbury Prison, Shrewsbury Castle, the Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, and pretty gardens of The Dingle, before following the Shropshire Way walking trail for further countryside scenes. Enjoy a memorable stay at The Ferns.

The picturesque Welsh Marches scenery surrounds the mediaeval market town of Ludlow, which is located on the River Teme. The town has a wonderful variety of architecture, including Ludlow Castle, which is almost 900 years old and one of the first stone castles to be erected in England. The castle is now open throughout the year and offers a variety of activities, such as outdoor theatre, culinary, art, and literature festivals, as well as several antique and art fairs. A huge public riverside green and weir are available at Millenium Green, which is located beneath the castle. The Green Cafe, which is close on the river, also offers good indoor and outdoor dining options. Street markets have been held in Ludlow since the eleventh century. Today, the town square hosts a classic open-air market every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday of the year. With the "Local to Ludlow" produce market on certain Thursdays and an "Antique & Flea market" on some Sundays, there are more than forty stalls selling a variety of goods, including fresh vegetables, cheeses, books, and a selection of local crafts.

Comfy beds and plenty of space. Garden is quite big - just a shame we couldn't enjoy it properly due to the constant rain! Can imagine it'll be so nice sitting out there in the summer. Driveway is too small for a normal sized car but we just parked across the gate which was fine.

It has been sympathetically renovated in a traditional style with the added bonus of modern amenities. However, the listed 'off street parking' is too small for anything other than a Smart car or micro-mini, this should be more explicit. Also, whilst there is a lovely wood burner (with a fire made up ready, thanks) there are no fire dogs/tools (poker etc.).

Easy to walk into Ludlow itself to enjoy the facilities there. The property was clean and tidy when we arrived. All the bedrooms were freshly made up. A small welcome 'hamper' of essential groceries would have been appreciated. The property was cold (we went at the end of February) so the heating could have been turned up on arrival day from the 5°C to help warm it through for us. The wood burner was a lovely addition however fireproof gloves, a poker and tongs would have been helpful. And a washing machine would have been nice only because of the wintery weather when we visited.
