The traditional West Riding village of Slaithwaite is set in the Colne Valley in the South Pennines, just six miles from the picturesque market town of Holmfirth. Full of history, the village retains several buildings from the mid 15th century, including Slaithwaite Hall, one of the few surviving cruck frame structures in Yorkshire. The viaduct dominates the skyline and is an awe-inspiring sight, whilst the village centre is very pretty with the restored Huddersfield Canal winding through and a lovely selection of independent shops, self-brewing pubs and eateries, where you can sample local fare. The nearby village of Marsden boasts the tourist attractions of Tunnel End and the National Trust's Marsden Moor Estate, which is a haven for walkers and naturalists alike, and it also hosts the internationally renowned Jazz Festival each year. The appealing town of Holmfirth is well worth a visit for its shops and quality pubs and restaurants and is known as the home of the long running comedy series, Last of the Summer Wine, Bamforth's postcards and its Picturedrome concert venue. Within easy reach of the northern Peak District and the southern Yorkshire Dales, Slaithwaite is well-situated, offering beautiful and diverse countryside with great walking and cycling opportunities.
