About this property

Richmond is a vibrant market town on the River Swale, surrounded by stunning meadows, moorland, fells and farmland, with miles of footpaths and cycleways to explore - just the place for a fun holiday with family or friends. However, no matter how impressive the location, if the holiday cottage isn't up to standard then your holiday will be a disappointment. Garden Cottage delivers on every level! With space for up to six people in three bedrooms and an enormous south-facing garden, it is decorated to a high standard and enjoys beautiful views of Richmond Castle and the surrounding countryside. The cottage is just a short stroll to the shops, restaurants, sites and amenities of Richmond, and within easy reach of the best of Swaledale and Wensleydale.

Garden Cottage proves that well-built houses only improve with age. It is difficult to believe that this gorgeous stone cottage was built nearly two hundred years ago, as the owners have sympathetically restored and modernised the property to provide 4-Star Gold standard accommodation for up to six people in three bedrooms. Recently they received a coveted rose award from Visit England – only 100 are presented in England each year. Families and friends love this cottage, which is almost as lovely outside as it is within. Garden Cottage is just a five-minute walk from the River Swale, the centre of Richmond and great pubs like Castle Tavern, The Town Hall Hotel and The Black Lion.

Richmond is a fantastic Yorkshire market town that is buzzing with an energy that belies its age. Being so close to the Yorkshire Dales makes it a favourite with ramblers, cyclists, and people who want a comfortable and convenient base for exploring everything this region offers. There are places named Richmond all around the world, but this is the original and, arguably, the best! You cannot avoid the Norman castle which towers above the town’s roofs and affords visitors incredible views of the surrounding countryside. Step forward a few centuries into streets lined with elegant Georgian buildings, and take a photo of the impressive obelisk in front of the church near the market. There are plenty of places to eat, drink and shop, three museums, 3-screen cinema, art galleries, the beautiful Georgian theatre and a leisure centre.

There are lots of places to ramble and hike, regardless of your ability. A favourite route is to The George and Dragon in Hudswell, which is both child and dog-friendly. This award-winning pub is a hub of the village, and a relaxed walk through beautiful woodland is an excellent way to build up a thirst. The Richmond Town Trail is an accessible walk that takes you past some of the town’s landmarks, or you could book a guided tour (or a guided ghost tour!), so you do not miss any of the details. There is a lovely circular walk along the river to Easby Abbey which also takes in the river’s waterfall, or take to the moors and discover Rogan’s Seat and Great Pinseat Hill. Road cyclists and mountain bikers will also find plenty of routes to keep them happily occupied.

Swaledale and Wensleydale offer plenty to visitors of all tastes whether you love sports, history, eating, or all of the above. The Constable Burton Gardens, Jacobean Kiplin Hall and gardens, Thorp Perrow Arboretum and Durham are all a leisurely half an hour’s drive. Slightly further away, but still within an hour from Garden Cottage, are Harrogate, Newcastle, York, Newby Hall, the North York Moors and High Force.

Garden Cottage is homely and comfortable, offering a high standard of accommodation, so you enjoy every moment of your stay, especially the quiet moments which are simply about spending time with your family and friends.

Accommodation Comprises:

It is easy to see why this beautiful cottage is such a hit with visitors. The interiors are light and comfortable, furnished in a style that complements the age of the building without making it feel like a museum. The south-facing garden is an oasis of green with views over the rooftops towards Richmond Castle.

Downstairs:

  • Entry is via an attractive flagstone hallway which is perfect for shucking off coats and walking boots, and for drying muddy paws. It also acts as a secure storage space for bikes and pushchairs.
  • The first room you come to is the kitchen which is decorated in a welcoming, country style. Cream cabinets hold a sensible selection of cooking tools and utensils - this is a kitchen where you can easily recreate your family's favourite meals, while a dishwasher makes cleaning up a breeze. There is even a small table with a window seat where you can sit and rest while you are cooking, or keep the cook company. The stairs to the first floor are tucked away behind the kitchen door.
  • Living/dining room which is a light and airy room thanks to south-facing French doors that open into the garden. As well as comfortable seating there is a digital TV with DVD player and a selection of books and games for guests to enjoy during their stay. A coal-effect electric fire adds warmth and ambience on cold winter nights without the inconvenience of clearing away coal ash.
  • With six people in the house, the downstairs cloakroom with WC and handbasin is a necessity you will appreciate.
  • Upstairs:

All of the bedrooms and the family bathroom are on the first floor.

  • Master bedroom with double aspect windows, make lovely views in two directions. Exposed beams give it character, and there is ample space for a cot if required. Large fitted wardrobes allow you to unpack and settle in for the duration of your stay. The ensuite has a bathroom with shower above, WC and handbasin.
  • Second double bedroom which is so charming that you will be happy when bedtime comes. It has fantastic castle views and watching the sun rise behind the tower is a part of your holiday you will never forget.
  • The third bedroom can be either a single or a twin, depending on your needs. The room also faces the castle and has a full sized single bed with a single trundle bed that can be rolled away if not in use.
  • Family bathroom with a walk-in shower, bath, WC and handbasin.
  • Outside: The enclosed south facing garden is a hit with guests of all ages, especially the four-legged ones. A paved patio is ideal for outdoor meals when the weather is good, while the lawn area provides lots of room for running and playing. A separate building houses a washing machine and other laundry facilities, and there is a freezer room which is shared with the owner. The cottage comes with private off-street parking for two cars.

Additional Information: Utilities, linen, towels and WiFi are all included in the cost of hire. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome at no extra charge with prior agreement from the owner. Short breaks (minimum three nights) are possible depending on availability. Garden Cottage is a no-smoking property.
