Thornlea is a charming and well-maintained cottage on the edge of Richmond, praised for its cleanliness, comfort, and welcoming hosts. Guests appreciate the peaceful garden, beautiful views, and easy access to both the town and countryside walks. The property is well-equipped, with many thoughtful touches from the owners, and is a popular choice for repeat visitors. While the kitchen is compact and some mention minor road noise or Wi-Fi issues, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, making it an excellent base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales.
Multiple reviews highlight the cottage as very clean, well-maintained, and tidy, with no significant complaints about cleanliness.
The location is frequently praised for being close to Richmond yet peaceful, with lovely views and easy access to walks and local attractions. A few mention proximity to the main road, but most find it convenient and quiet.
Guests consistently describe the cottage as comfortable, cosy, and warm, with good beds and a relaxing atmosphere. Minor mentions of firm beds and occasional road noise, but overall comfort is highly rated.
The property is well-equipped, with a lovely garden, parking, and all necessary amenities. The kitchen is noted as small by several guests, and there are occasional suggestions for improvements (e.g., blackout curtains, grab rails), but these do not detract significantly from the overall experience.
Many guests mention thoughtful touches such as welcome packs with tea, coffee, biscuits, milk, and sometimes wine. While these gifts are appreciated, it should be noted that such extras are not guaranteed for every stay.
A modern detached bungalow situated on the fringe of the market town of Richmond, named Great Town of the Year 2009 by the Academy of Urbanism. The cottage offers very comfortable, well-equipped accommodation in a superb location for discovering this beautiful region and visitors will receive a very warm welcome from the owners who live next dorr. Richmond offers a Norman castle, Georgian Theatre, museums and beautiful riverside walks.
The ancient market town of Richmond is situated at the entrance to Swaledale, a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. With a maze of cobbled streets and narrow alleys – or 'wynds' – this town has over nine centuries of history. Growing up around the castle - a Norman fortress dating back to 1071 – Richmond literally means 'strong hill' and is derived from the Old English 'Riche-mont'. The River Swale runs through the town itself and provides not only lovely walks, but also safe paddling areas and the occasional small waterfall. Radiating from the market place, where a weekly market and monthly farmer's market are still observed, the lovely cobbled streets are lined with numerous shops, pubs and restaurants.

Richmond has lots to offer and places such as Raby Castle and Locomotion are less than half an hour's drive away. Thornlea was comfortable, spacious and well appointed. I did find the bed was a little too firm but that's personal preference. The owners were friendly and helpful. We would return in the future.
