Scalby, a lovely rural village with a historic church, café/restaurant, shops and two local inns, is only a 15-minute walk from the cottages and, if visitors can bear to leave the comfort and special tranquillity of Barmoor, it is ideally located for walking, cycling or touring the glorious forests, moorland and seascapes which are virtually on the doorstep. Each cottage offers a ‘Drive/walk, good food guide’, compiled by the owners to maximise visitors’ holiday enjoyment.

Among Scarborough’s many attractions are a Sea Life Centre and Theatre in the Round (offering productions and films for all ages) as well as plenty of restaurants, cafés and evening entertainment. Sea trips are available from the harbour and coarse fishing is enjoyed at nearby Throxenby Mere.

The Forge Valley Woodland Reserve lies ½ mile walk from the cottages and quiet lanes lead directly to Langdale Forest. Golf courses and riding stables are found locally and the more energetic might like to tackle the nearby Cleveland Way long distance footpath, with its stunning views over land and sea. The inviting moorland countryside and picturesque villages of ‘Heartbeat’ fame are a joy to explore and a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway is a must.

A 30-minute drive up the coast leads to the many delights of Robin Hood’s Bay and the old port of Whitby, a fascinating historic town, traditionally associated with Count Dracula and in whose attractive harbour tall ships often lie at anchor. The great houses of Sledmere, Burton Agnes and Castle Howard are all within 20 miles of the cottages.. All properties: Gas central heating, Electricity, Gas, Bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi included. This was a lovely cottage to stay in - very spacious lots of bathrooms! the beds were comfortable, the cottage was clean, welcoming and in such a lovely place that felt like we were in the middle of nowhere but in fact there were local amenities not far away and a lovely family friendly pub we found. A washing machine and dyer was provided in a shared space which I love the idea of - however would benefit from a clothes airer to dry clothes on those hot days when a dryer is not necessary and somewhere to put the wet towels from the beach. It was very hot during our stay and the husband felt he could have done with a fan - but I was happy with the windows being open! I cooked several evening meals in the cottage for a family of four and found that there was everything I needed to do so. Whilst we did not see the owners apart from briefly they were very friendly in terms of the guide left and wanting us to contact if we needed anything. Whilst there were other families about and we could hear the odd noise it was still a tranquil friendly place to be. There was also enclosed back garden which is ideal for the children and not having to worry about them wandering off and getting into trouble. The cottage was 12 minutes away from Scarborough and the routes there very easy and there were other activities and places close by.

A lovely cottage in a quiet, peaceful countryside setting but only a few minutes drive from the coast and the centre of Scarborough. It has beautiful well tended gardens with outdoor seating to enjoy the amazing views. The cottage was well equipped with everything we needed to enjoy a perfect holiday and we would certainly return.
