Tucked away down a quiet yard just off Whitby’s vibrant Flowergate, Hilda’s Hideaway is a truly unique and quirky retreat in the centre of town. Dating back to 1805, this charming three-storey cottage has been lovingly furnished with a mix of antique and modern pieces, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The walls are adorned with eclectic artwork collected by the owner from local galleries and talented friends, adding to its creative and homely feel.
Accessed via communal internal stairs, the first floor opens into a well-equipped kitchen with a table and benches, ideal for sociable meals. The bathroom is also on this level, featuring a shower over the bath. On the second floor, the lounge is a feast for the eyes, with cosy sofas, a second dining area, countless trinkets and an electric wood-burning stove. The top floor houses two beautifully styled bedrooms under the eaves, complete with dormer windows offering breathtaking views over the rooftops to Whitby Abbey and the sea beyond. Both rooms include built-in wardrobes and convenient in-room sinks. Please note, the stairs are steep and the bedrooms have low, sloping ceilings typical of a period property.

The flat is very conveniently located in the heart of Whitby, with its numerous shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Pannet Park, the beach, harbour and clifftops are all just a few minutes' walk away. Despite being a stone's throw from several lively pubs, being in a yard, it is extremely quiet. The bedrooms on the top floor have views of the Abbey and the harbour. We arrived on public transport, so we didn't need to grapple with Whitby's parking, but there is a loading bay right outside the entrance to Burns Yard. Inside, the cottage is clean, recently refurbished, and extremely well-appointed: the kitchen is particularly well-equipped for a holiday let. The cottage feels very homely, and is decorated and furnished in a unique, slightly quirky style - this is Whitby after all!The beds are comfortable, and each room has its own wash basin. The owner had taken the additional step of padding the corners of the low dormer windows in the bedrooms to help guests avoid banging their heads on the low parts of the ceiling. The booking was easy, the information was clear, and the owner was communicative and responsive. Overall, we got the impression that the owner had taken great care to create a very high-quality, clean, comfortable, cosy and homely experience for their guests. We would definitely stay there again. 10/10.
