South Villa in Whitby offers stunning sea views and is praised for its excellent location, with easy beach access and proximity to local amenities. Guests appreciate the well-equipped home, cleanliness, and thoughtful touches like provided essentials. While the property boasts comfortable bedding and a warm atmosphere, some guests note the need for maintenance and modernisation.
The property is generally described as spotlessly clean internally, with high-quality bedding and towels. However, some guests noted that the windows were dirty, affecting the otherwise clean impression.
The location is consistently lauded for its proximity to the beach, local eateries, and the ease of accessing Whitby. The sea views and sunrise experiences are particular highlights.
While mattresses are found comfortable and the house warm, some guests mention small and uncomfortable double beds, and a cold top floor bedroom, suggesting room for improvement in comfort.
Facilities are well-received in terms of kitchen essentials and cleanliness, but several reviews point out the need for more baking trays, repairs, and a fixed log burner, indicating some deficiencies in maintenance.
Guests are pleased with thoughtful provisions such as nespresso pods, prosecco, and Yorkshire teabags. It's worth noting that while these gifts are appreciated, their inclusion during a stay cannot be guaranteed.

On the surface it seems to be a lovely cottage in a great location. There are safety issues which have made us say we wouldn't recommend the property. These need addressing before an accident occurs. The steps up to the property are steep and there is no handrail. They can be slippery when it rains. My husband slipped down them onto the road when it was dark. There is no outside light. There is no light in the porch. The light in the hallway is just about adequate. The lock on the front door is old and stiff. We struggled to get into the property. There was only one key!A safety issue if someone is upstairs and the other person goes out and needs to lock the property. The fire escape routes are inadequate. The only safe way out is through the front door. All of the windows are sealed units with opening at the top which is too high to use as an escape route. There is a back door, but this leads onto an enclosed area that had no escape route. It is enclosed by walls on all sides, the lowest one being over three metres high! An absolute death trap. The escape route from all of the bedrooms is by the staircase and through the front door. There are no accessible opening windows. The second floor is accessed by a closed in box staircase. There would be no way of escaping from up there. There are barely enough sockets in the kitchen. You can use the toaster or the kettle or the microwave, but not together. There are no table lamps in the living area, just bright lights. There is a pitiful bedside light in the front bedroom, barely adequate for a child. It kept topling over.I could write more, but feel it is pointless. We didn't get much support from Cottages.com, they just provided us with an extra key on the third day.We greased the lock ourselves. Infact, we ere scared to use it, so we left it unlocked.
