This striking retreat is surrounded by gorgeous Galloway countryside. Views from the windows will whet your appetite for outdoor adventures: walk to the woods and castle ruins on the doorstep, or head 2 miles south to Dalbeattie Forest and you’ll find a mix of tranquil walking paths, scenic viewpoints, picnic spots and cycle trails – the Forestry Commission’s 7Stanes mountain biking routes pass through. En route to the forest, Dalbeattie town has a range of stores and eateries where you can source self-catering supplies and shop for unique souvenirs. For a change of scenery, drive to Sandyhills (6.5 miles), famous for its golden sands and dramatic tidal changes. Pretty Kippford (5.5 miles) and Rockcliffe (8 miles) sit beside the River Urr – walk the Jubilee Path between the two and you’ll pass ancient hill forts and flowering meadows. Further afield, foodie-favourite Castle Douglas is within 8 miles.

Holiday mode is engaged the moment you turn off the main road and follow the winding lane up to the working farm you’ll call home; park and pause to admire the views as you unload your luggage – they really are stunning. Enter via the conservatory and you’ll earmark it as a space for quiet contemplation; canine companions can chill out at your feet as you look out at the verdant landscape beyond. Continue into the hallway and, to your right, the kitchen/dining room houses all the self-catering essentials. The modern shower room is accessed directly from here, and you’ll find a tumble dryer and freezer in an adjoining building which is shared with the owner. Head back across the hall and the lounge has a choice of seating arranged before the TV; turn on the wood burner-effect electric heater for added after-dark ambience. When it’s time to sleep, head upstairs to find three bedrooms offering comfort for every family member – one has a double bed, another has twin beds, and the third has full-size bunks.

The conservatory looks across the pretty front garden, which is lawned and has borders planted for seasonal interest. You’ll also find a patio area furnished for al fresco dining; fire up the BBQ and enjoy food and drinks with a side-serving of drool-inducing views. Parking is provided.
