Machermore Cottage is a delightful and typical Galloway cottage set in the most stunning location, with breathtaking views over open farmland to Luce Bay in the distance. Renovated in 2021, Machermore Cottage is spacious and beautifully furnished throughout. The open plan kitchen/dining is the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner and the lounge offers those amazing views from the large picture window. The garden at Machermore also takes full advantage of the views and you can sit and relax watching the sun set over the bay. Machermore Cottage is set on a section of “The Whithorn Way”, a mapped 143-mile walking and cycling route so the ideal location for walkers or cyclists.
This area of Dumfries and Galloway boasts rugged coastlines and secluded sandy beaches which benefit from the warmth of the passing Gulf Stream and is surrounded by breath taking scenery, offering an ideal base from which to explore the area. There are many attractions within easy reach of Machermore Cottage including beautiful gardens, such as the world famous Logan Botanic Garden, golfing, fishing and of course a trip to this area would not be complete without a visit to Scotland’s most southerly point and the rspb Nature Reserve where thousands of seabirds nest in the cliff face during the spring and summer.

I must make it clear that the only reason that I did not offer Excellent for Local Amenities is the very reason that I can say that this proved to be one of the best cottage holidays that I have experienced. The cottage was beautifully kept and in the most amazing landscape, with view across to the Mull of Galloway (brought clearer and nearer by the kind provision of a telescope in the lounge). The house had nothing lacking and we prepared a variety of meals using the kitchen appliances. It was so peaceful, simply by being away from the main roads. The passing traffic consisted of a couple of agricultural vehicles on three occasions. The only noise was that of the birds and the sheep in the surrounding fields.There is a Convenience Store in Glenluce (some 2 miles away), but most shopping will be done at Stranraer or Newton Stewart (both less than 15 miles away). This was our first holiday with an EV, but we found charging points all over the place (sometimes in very unexpected places). You may need to download more than one App to be certain of services, but we had no major issues.So, the house and surroundings are perfect for a quiet holiday, but you're not going to be able to walk round to the supermarket or the local chippie.We can live with that, and we hope to return in the not too distant future.The only improvement I can suggest is the re-wording of the instructions of how to find the road which leads to the cottage. The instructions say the road is signposted as being The Whithorn Way. Well, yes it is, but only if you are heading north from Auchenmalg. If you're travelling south from Glenluce, you can only see the back of the sign. Better to turn left when you see the dustbins (although that gives a poor description of the beauties ahead!)

This cottage was comfortable, warm, spacious, beautifully furnished and extremely well equipped, and so peaceful, with lovely views over the fields down to the sea. The host, Shona, was very friendly. Some might find it isolated - this was one of the things we loved about it!
