We loved this little cottage! It is very comfortable, quiet and restful. The woodburning stove was a wonderful feature, which we used every evening, but overall the cottage was warm, with a good heating system. Plenty of hot water and a great shower. We would definitely recommend this cottage to others wanting quite restful accommodation, and we would book this property again.

Rowan Cottage is situated in Borgue, a small, very quiet village near Kirkcudbright. The cottage offers a great base for exploring Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtonshire, and there are some lovely beaches nearby (e.g. Brighouse Bay). However, there are few amenities in the village itself - a small playpark at the Public Hall, and the Borgue Hotel (open Wed to Sunday, serving a limited menu of plain but tasty food at lunchtime and dinnertime [we had lunch on the Sunday of our visit]). The cottage was extremely clean and retained charming features that harked back to its historic function as a free church. The lounge was very comfy, with a lovely view over fields - in fact, the website photo doesn't do it justice. The kitchen was well-equipped. The main bathroom had a very powerful shower over the bath. Lots of little extras made the cottage feel homely (e.g., books, board games, kids' books and crayons in the twin room). Sadly, we found the beds very uncomfortable and just could not get a decent sleep. To some extent that probably reflects a personal preference for a firm mattress, but it did impact our holiday. One other thing to beware of is the steepish staircase to the bedrooms, although this did not trouble us, and there is an ensuite toilet in the double room. The parking was easy, especially since there was no-one staying in the adjoining cottage at our visit. Across the parking area there is a garden for the exclusive use of Rowan Cottage guests. The Visitors' Book shows that the cottage has several visitors who return year after year, and we can see why, but for us the quality of sleep would be a deal-breaker.

the cottage itself was lovely, very clean, but there wasn't much in the village of Borgue itself. No shops just the Pub, which was very welcoming. We would definitely book it again if we were in the area.
