Enclosed garden with sitting-out area and garden furniture. Bike store. Private parking for 2 cars. No smoking. Please note: The sea is 50 yards away from the property. No charging of electric vehicles allowed. Mobile telephone and WiFi signals can be intermittent due to location of the property.. One of a pair of original gardener’s cottages, Shore Cottage is a traditional stone holiday cottage with an enclosed garden only yards from the secluded, tree-lined, sandy beach at Rigg Bay. This charming cottage, on the edge of the original walled garden of Galloway House, retains many period features. Beachcombers will love this location, as will writers, painters, nature and garden visitors, activity seekers or honeymooners. Attractive walks for all ages and abilities start from your door, and you can head south on the shore path through primrose woods to Cruggleton Cliffs and the castle beyond. Or head north towards Garlieston village via the woodland garden and arboretum of Galloway House Gardens, famous for its spring display of azaleas and rhododendrons.
Golf and fishing are within easy reach, as are the Galloway Hills and the world class 7Stanes mountain bike trails. Wigtown, Scotland’s book town, as well as Whithorn, the cradle of early British Christianity, and the harbour villages of Isle of Whithorn and Port William, are a short drive or cycle ride away on quiet roads. Beach 50 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

What a bitter disappointment. It was described as a secluded spot. A quiet retreat for painters, writers…! Maybe it is outside school holidays but the constant stream of dog walkers peering in the windows, shouting conversations and screaming children as they walked past the cottage made for a different experience. This was compounded by the fact that the bathroom is a death trap even if you don’t take into consideration the health hazards of mould that was on both the bath surround and windows. No slip mat, no grab handle and a very slippery bath surface on which to shower. PHOTOS AVAILABLE The bathroom extractor didn’t work, the Wi-Fi didn’t work at all and the housekeeper that we were told to contact didn’t respond for 4 days and when she did she said it’s not her job to be the main point of contact - she just does the cleaning at changeover and doesn’t understand why people keep contacting her about problems with the cottage. We knew there wasn’t a dishwasher before we went BUT absolutely NO means of making a coffee, not so much as a Cafetière, a jug and filter papers (or even in my wildest dreams a coffee machine) seemed quite outrageous given the cost of rental of the property. Not everyone drinks tea. The welcome package turned out to be a sliced loaf of bread that was already a day out of date when we arrived and some butter and strawberry jam. Not even any instant coffee. Holiday time is precious and to be so misled about the suitability of your accommodation is unnecessarily cruel. What we should’ve been told is that the estate owners have installed a paying car park for the public not far from the cottage to allow people with vans and other vehicles to bring crowds of people with surfboards, boats, dog walkers galore, that is never empty day or night and discharges loud, intrusive volumes of people and their pets, only some of whom are well trained turning the place into a completely public thoroughfare on a par with a cottage on a High Street in the middle of a town. What was supposed to be a quiet retreat was a very stressful experience. I love dogs but I don’t expect cleaning chemicals used between lets to be so strong that you have to open all the windows and let in all midges on the evening you arrive. NB No housekeeping available - cleaner was away for a long weekend and troubleshooting isn’t her job says Daria when she txted back 4 days after our arrival and you’re not allowed in the property before 4 pm. We were only there for 5 nights. This is not a company I could recommend to rent property from or through because if they had done their homework properly they would have checked the property intermittently and noticed the windows have not been cleaned for months. The locks on the doors don’t work very well and if it was half the price it still wouldn’t be value for money. The place has the potential to be really lovely but it’s rundown, in need of redecoration, repair and a thorough cleaning but above all avoid school holidays and note this is very far from secluded. It is geographically remote but if you’re looking for something peaceful go to one of the nearby villages, not here.

Excellent location, if you want a quiet relaxing break. 100 metres walk to a very quiet beach (our dog loved it) and coastal path. The local village has a dog friendly pub (booking recommended) and cafe, which you can walk to in about 20 minutes through the estate or a little longer via the coast path. The cottage was clean and had most things we needed. A washing line would have be useful for drying beach towels. Just be aware there aren't any supermarkets near by.

Shore cottage is a charming and cosy cottage in a stunning location but it is sadly in need of some care and maintenance. Whilst generally clean enough there were cobwebs and daddy long legs in the corners of every room and the skirting boards had not been swept in a while. The windows were filthy and some couldn't be opened because of age and layers of paint. There was no washing line even though pegs were provided and only one teatowel for the week which seems a bit mean. Luckily we brought our own.The garden could have been a lovely space but was overgrown and neglected apart from the grass having been cut. For the amount we paid to stay here we think the standard should have been better. We have lived in very old cottages and understand their challenges well but Shore Cottage badly needs some TLC.We chose this cottage because of the beach at Rigg bay and this didn't disappoint. It was fabulous. The cottage setting is peaceful and beautiful.
