Nantmel is perfectly placed for exploring some of the most breathtaking scenery and attractions in Powys. Just a short drive away is Rhayader, known as the gateway to the spectacular Elan Valley. With sweeping reservoirs, dramatic dams, woodland trails, and open landscapes, the area offers endless opportunities for walking, cycling, wildlife watching, and photography. As part of a designated Dark Sky Reserve, it’s also one of the best places in the UK for stargazing.
A must-visit for nature enthusiasts is Gigrin Farm, where red kites gather daily for feeding, a truly unforgettable wildlife experience. Nearby Llandrindod Wells offers Victorian architecture, a picturesque lake for boating and fishing, and scenic walks around the surrounding parkland. For riverside strolls, independent shops, and cosy cafés, Builth Wells provides charm and Welsh hospitality in equal measure, along with seasonal events at the Royal Welsh Showground.

The accommodation at Caban Dulas was lovely, comfortable, clean with a wonderful outlook. It is very well placed for visiting lots of wonderful attractions in Mid Wales, the dams at the Elan Valley were stunning. The hot tub was great, the showers were hot and the beds comfortable. One point to raise, there is no mention in the holiday details how close the sheep are to the garden, it is lovely to see them but we have a livestock reactive Collie, it would have been good to know as we probably would have avoided booking this particular property. However we made the best of it and he actually managed to ignore them mostly, despite this we still had a wonderful time and would recommend Caban Dulas for a lovely stay in Mid Wales.

We had an amazing stay at Caban Dulas and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. We didn’t explore much on-site walking-wise, so can’t comment too much on what’s immediately nearby, but we spent most of our time out and about and loved every minute. Elan Valley is around a 20‑minute drive away and was a real highlight for us – we walked around the dams and were blown away by the stunning views and scenery.Coming back to the lodge after long walks and relaxing in the hot tub was perfect. The huge garden was a real bonus – very secure for our little dog and plenty of space for us to set up our badminton net and play games. Evenings were magical with super clear skies – stargazing was one of our favourite parts of the stay.The site itself is well kept and peaceful, with lovely touches like the llamas, and it was great being so close to the lambs and sheep. The owners were fantastic – always quick to reply if we had any questions or needed anything.The lodge is self-catering and very well equipped. The kitchen had everything we needed, including dishwasher tablets, washing-up liquid and washing machine detergent. Just bring your own salt, pepper and condiments. Beds were super comfy and the showers were great. They do take a little while to warm up, but this wasn’t an issue at all. The lodge itself is beautiful with lots of space.Llandrindod Wells is only about 15 minutes away and has a large Tesco, restaurants, cafés and a lovely lake with great walks nearby. Overall, it was a fantastic holiday and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Caban Dulas.
