What our customers say about their holidays

  • Michelle - Verified booking

We stayed here during the hottest week of the year so it was more like Tuscany than Wales!

We couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay, as with the 30 degree temperatures, it was too hot to visit many places, (especially with our elderly dog), so we mostly relaxed on the deck and enjoyed the beautiful view. The parasol was missing from the table when we arrived, but after contacting Debbie, it was quickly delivered to us by her caretaker, Jo, from which point onwards we were able to eat al fresco from breakfast to supper. It was a lovely, peaceful location, with only the sounds of the birds & the sheep softly drifting across the valley. (Except for two days when several fast jets on their way to the Mach loop went over – which was thrilling!) The cabin was very comfortable, though we did have to buy a large fan to keep us cool day & night in the exceptionally hot un-Welsh weather. Everything you need for a short stay is there so don’t let the size of the accommodation put you off. In fact, with the cabin opening out on to the large deck outside, it all felt quite spacious. Debbie told us we could use their hose to cool our dog down, and how to get down to the stream, which was literally a five minute walk up the road. This turned out to be a regular evening walk for our dog, who due to the heat, actually enjoyed paddling in the shallow water, (as usually he’s a bit of an aquaphobe). Notes for other stayers – Tesco & Asda deliver to the village, so we were well stocked up for our week in the sun without having to find a local shop. Like others, we couldn’t get a TV signal, but it wasn’t an issue for us given the weather. Also we couldn’t get a phone signal, so did feel a little cut off at first. (The lodge has great wifi, but unfortunately neither of our current phones has calling over wifi available.) However, Debbie advised us to walk up the hill a little, which did indeed solve the signal problem. And Jo said to give her landline number to anyone that might need to contact us, as she is just down in the village. Our week’s stay was heaven and I’d thoroughly recommend it, as it is an idyllic rural location and the lodge has all the home comforts you need to enjoy your time there.

What a lovely surprise awaited us when we arrived, flowers, bread, tea,Welsh cakes, crisps, wine and some chocolate These really made our first night …….

Thanks Rowan cottage is a comfortable cottage just off the main high street in Builth Wells The cottage had everything we needed, and was very clean and tidy The double bed on the third floor was very comfy we slept very well, on the second floor there are 2 single beds and a lovely bathroom with both a shower and a bath The ground floor is shared with a kitchen and a cosy living room with a log burner which we didn’t use as it wasn’t cold enough The garden was a great bonus for our dog Plenty of shops on Castle street and pubs think we counted 7 There’s some lovely cafe’s too we only visited the Cwtch cafe which do a lovely full breakfast for £5.95 if you don’t fancy cooking We really enjoyed our stay the only problem was when we first booked we thought we had WiFi as it did state WiFi but elsewhere on the listing it states coming soon which we didn’t see It wasn’t a problem for us, but was for our son and be aware the phone signal is very patchy depending on your supplier There is on road car parking outside the cottage but we never managed to park there Behind the property is a Co op were you can pay to park over night or there’s a free carpark in town The photo of the cottage really doesn’t do justice to the quality of the cottage on the inside it really is lovely I’m sure we’ll be back as we enjoyed the area so much and thanks for calling us to let us know we’d left our dog bed which allowed us to come back to collect it

The Searle is not really a cottage.

It is an apartment within a converted Pub. Had I known would not have booked it. extremely clean and modern decor. apart from the old disgusting dirty and stained bedroom curtains hanging off the rails. Also issues with lack of clothes wardrobe . The soot and water mix from leaking chimney stack staining the back wall of fire place. The kitchen had long term (see past reviews) breakages and missing cooking items. Self catering!!?? The outside in a state of neglect and dis-repair. Leaking hot tub . Owner switched it off. There is no garden. It is a concrete ‘yard’, with a trip hazard foot path from entrance gate. Secondary gate latch hanging off ….not pet safe. Render and crack damage around entrance door, walls and damp course level. Blocked (long term growing vegetation) rain guttering, creating a Niagara Falls onto path slabs . Sleep was impossible. Then I saw the Property for sale sign, since March 2024. I concluded this was a significant reason for Searle’s general dis-repair and the owners non- commitment to her property and her guests mental comfort. When sold it is somebody else’s problem. Three days in I had enough . left and returned home. Left comments in guest book , dated and signed . I text owner Sara Jay/Jane when home. To date I have not had a reply. I did not expect one . This standard is not what I expect from Sykes Cottages. Please see my account list of prev cottages and 10/10 reviews. Kind regards Michael Reid

I agree with previous reviews that Penlone cottage was a comfortable cottage in a tranquil setting.

There are a few things that need attention that would have improved our experience and resulted in a higher rating Firstly the cottage is for 4 people and yet there were only 2 cups and saucers (yes there were ample mugs), only 3 wine glasses and a mismatch of other glasses and unusually there were no egg cups. Even though a dish brush was provided there was no dishcloth for wiping down surfaces in the kitchen, this has always been provided in previous Sykes cottages. The lane directly opposite the cottage provides an easy, safe 5 minute walk to the main road where visitors to the cottage can pick up the walk to Rhayader or the Elan Valley. It would have been useful to have had this information provided, I have left a hand drawn map in the information folder at the cottage as we couldn't find anything similar in the information provided. We had an enjoyable week in the cottage and loved the new experience of using a rayburn oven for cooking, the daily walks to either Rhayader or the Elan Valley were thoroughly enjoyed as was also the exploration and walks around the reservoirs. On a final note, I was surprised to see two very large shaggy rugs covering the carpet in the lounge and dining room. As the only effective way of cleaning these is by lifting and shaking I am not sure how practical they are, they kept ridging and it was difficult to keep them flat.

Had a wonderful week at Penlone Cottage the cottage is very clean and very well equipped.

On arrival the hosts had left us milk, welsh cakes and two small bottles of wine, thank you. We loved watching the bird life around the cottage and had many different species visiting the feeding station on the property (bring your own food for them though) It is situated down a quiet lane adjacent to a horse trekking centre, Red Kites can also be seen across the fields by the cottage. It is within easy walking distance of Rhayader and the Caban Coch dam and visitor centre and also to the Red Kite feeding centre at Grigin Farm (about 40 minute walk away) which is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon watching the Red Kites. A little further afield are the other Elan valley dams which are worth visiting. If you like cycling there are two cycle routes (8 &81) which are well maintained. A bonus for us was that it is in a "Dark sky" area which gave us a superb view of the stars without light pollution. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property for a holiday.
