What our customers say about their holidays
Karen - Verified booking
The property is lovely in a very elevated spot, with incredible views.
Meaning lots of height therefore lots of steps. This was ok for us but our older dog struggled with the uncarpeted stairs to the living area from the front door. It is fairly central, vertically and not too far away from areas to walk with the dogs, you can go further up onto Dyers Hill or down to Victoria park. The outside area is nice but no real place for dogs to do their business, as itâs all decked. There are plants but they are on a slant, we had to let them out of the front door to find a bit of greenery. The property does have everything you could need and we were very comfortable. I donât think I fully appreciated how hard it would be to cope with the constant steps/up. A walk up from town, then a walk up to the property and when there another walk up to the living area and then to get the very best views, and they are spectacular, another 3 sets of steps to the top deck. The views are amazing, just be prepared for the exercise. We did have a shock one evening when we were going to bed, it had rained heavily, we discovered two huge snails on the wall by the front door. We couldnât see at first how they had got in but we realised there is quite a big gap by the front door skirting and they must have got in there, perhaps that could be looked at. All in all a lovely stay, but with our dogs and us getting older we wouldnât stay that high up again. We love Dartmouth so have already booked for next year, this time back on the level. Thank you to Karen and Ross for all the little touches in Dart Views.

The cottage was lovely and the location perfect for exploring what Whitby had to offer.
The beds were extremely comfortable and the 2nd bedroom bed was HUGE, certainly enough room if you have 2 kids that donât mind sharing. In our case we have 1 little one who was very excited to have a massive bed to herself! The cottage is also well kitted out for modern life with lovely bathrooms, kitchen and good wi-fi. The kitchen has everything you need although if youâre like us we didnât need to use it very often due to plentiful accessible fish and chips! Many thanks to the cottage owners who made the place so welcoming and Whitby was such a gem with both classic seaside/seafront activities (amusements, fairground rides, boat trips) alongside charming cobbled street coffee shops, restaurants and posh shops selling handmade jewellery (amongst other things). To top all that off you have the Abbey, a truly magical place to walk around and we were lucky enough to also catch a (child friendly) production of Dracula being performed within the grounds of the Abbey which was brilliant and at no extra charge! I think the theatre group that did it perform there every summer so itâs definitely worth it if you have a well timed visit. Thanks again so much to the owners of Ashben Cottage and we will definitely be heading back to Whitby!

We have an issue with Coast and Country properties who we believe manage the property.
When we arrived at the office they threw the envelope at us with the key in, when I asked for the postcode so we could find the house she rolled her eyes, went to a computer then scribbled it down on the envelope and threw it at us again. Not an utter of how to find it or enjoy your stay. When we did find the property we initially impressed. None of our issues are because of the owner they have been incredibly thoughtful with what they leave for guests. But the place was dirty. My kids love chocolate but refused to eat the biscuits left for us as they said they donât trust them because of the dirt. We found stained bed linen, saucepans which had food in them, dishwasher with pots in, cms of dust and mould in the rooms (I have some photos and would be happy to supply). The place was so damp that getting into bed the sheets felt wet. The double bed has a massive dip in it to the point my husband couldnât put his socks on on the last morning due to his back. On the whole the owner has been severely let down by agents. We wonât return. We thought weâd booked via Sykes but clearly we had gone through to Coast and Country who were appalling so we wonât you again.

We would definitely recommend Ashben Cottage for a holiday or short break in Whitby.
Ideal for both couples and families. The property is luxuriously decorated inside and all very new and modern and also very comfortable, with plenty of storage areas. The location is just off the main high street in the town so ideal to get about on foot and there is conveniently a car park just a couple hundred yards up the road to park your vehicle. We had a wonderful stay and the owners had left a surprise Birthday cake awaiting for my husband (which is one of the best cakes we have ever had and from Bothams the local bakery just around the corner also very handy for dinner time) we also had other goodies and condiments available which went down well. We found Whitby to be a lovely little harbour we just wished we had a bit longer than four nights there. Considering we went just as lockdown was just easing we were pleasantly surprised with how much was open and found all the local restaurants very accommodating and friendly and of course the fish and chips were amazing. If you want a lovely break in a convenient location then this is for you, we would definitely like to visit again. Thankyou.

We fell in love with this cottage.
It has been beautifully and lovingly updated, whilst retaining some of the original features (we loved the door knobs!). The upside-down layout makes the most of the stunning views, and the top deck is just fantastic. I sat up there every day with my morning cuppa; drinking in the views; watching the ferries and boats bustling about on the water; listening to the church bells and the steam trains across the river. The kitchen is well-equipped, the bathrooms were spotless, the beds are comfortable and warm. It's not far to the town centre, the walk home is not too bad once you get used to the steps (we found several different routes up from town), and we had no issues offloading our luggage when we arrived. On our last night we got a parking spot in the lane, so packing the car to leave was easy (but we didn't want to). We genuinely hope to be back. For us, this cottage is a truly great 'find'.
