What our customers say about their holidays

Problems at Walterâs Rest:- 1) Serious smell of cooking oil in the apartment on arrival.
Restaurant below apartment is venting cooking smells upwards through a tube. The smells enter the Childrenâs Bedroom through a sash window. The window can be moved to close it, but sash lock not working, so window falls down, so it is open all the time. 2) Sash window in living room can be pushed closed, but sash lock broken. This window is large, & drops down by approx 12 inches, & it cannot be closed. Cold can enter the room, gusts of wind, noise from below & seagull noise. 3) Sash window in bedroom can be pushed closed, but lock faulty. Window falls down. 4) Expelair extractor fan not working in bathroom. 5) Shower head faulty. It should be possible to adjust it to spray on the person having the shower. It sprays on the wall instead. 6) Toilet seat is continually moving when it is in use. The seat should be glued to the toilet pan, using bathroom sealant. 7) Serious difficulty in making the front door key open the door. The lock is very dry, & only needs oiling or addition of WD40 to fix it. This is a repeat complaint. 8) When unloading the car, or leaving the property at the end of stay, it is not possible to park legally in Raleigh Street. The description should say the car needs to be parked in a nearby road.

This is the second time we have stayed here so we knew what to expect.
This is a lovely, comfortable cottage, ideal for a couple with up to 1 child or a couple of dogs. A previous privacy issue in the bathroom has been addressed which is good (the other side of the bathroom window opens onto a higher level patio of adjacent houses and lacked privacy. A blind has now been fitted). The bathroom would benefit from shelves for toiletries as there is only the window sill for this. Also, the approach to the front door was completely overgrown with weeds which is not inviting but not really a problem. Generally very well equipped although I guess the property has suffered from previous guests taking things like tea spoons and drinking flutes away - what can you do? The front door and window is off a side path (not actually on Irsha Street which is great if you have nervous dogs as they are not bothered by people constantly walking by and when you leave the property, you do not immediately bump into other people with their dogs, if that is ever an issue. Lovely comfortable bed which gets the sun first thing in the morning. Downstairs bathroom is slightly inconvenient but that is the nature of the cottage and it does mean that it is a good size. Would definitely return.

The cottage was disappointing - immediately on arrival and throughout our entire 3 nights it smelt damp despite opening windows to try to get fresh air in and dry it out.
There should be a warning for people with chest complaints. The shower is tiny and ineffective - could not get a decent quality water output, the controls were broken and potentially dangerous. The shower tray was blocked and took a long while to drain. Kitchen very tiny and poor but was as described. Photos were somewhat misleading, we struggled to work out where the photographer had been standing (!) and had clearly been photoshopped as the lounge in reality was very dark. Multiple spiders in the bedroom (possibly a nest) that hadnât been hoovered. King sized bed very wobbly when you turned around over in bed. Had we stayed for a week we would have contacted you to complain and request to be moved. Also shower is NOT walk in! Location was good and close to amenities, but basically the cottage needs refreshing thoroughly. Would also suggest no need for a freezer in the lounge - it buzzed all night, why would anyone do this? Similarly, no need for an extra table under the stairs with a random microwave on it! Compared to other cottages we have stayed at, this was very poor and basic. It explains why this cottage was still available to book 3 weeks before we arrivedâ¦

This was our second time in Heron Cottage.
We enjoyed our stay just as much as the first. The cottage is very cosy, spotlessly clean from top to bottom, and it enjoys a central position in the village. Everything you could possibly need was on hand in the fully equipped kitchen. Also lots of DVDs for both adults and children (DVD player provided) in the cottage and linked into the new HDTV. WiFi is also provided, as was a number of board games and books to keep everyone occupied. All amenities are within a short walking distance. Including two pubs, fifty yards in either direction. We ate most nights at The Kingfisher where the food was great and the portions big. Lots of fresh locally caught sea food was on the 'Specials' menu. Best to book beforehand especially on weekends. Take a walk around the village where you'll find many interesting old streets with lots of history. We found everyone we met to be very friendly and always ready to have a chat. We would definitely recommend Heron Cottage. It's a great place to stay, as is the village of Coltyon, as a base to explore the wider region. We will definitely be back and will now be looking out for dates in 2025 to return.

Good apartment, good location, comfortable.
Only issues were that there were no instructions to be found anywhere at all for the large appliances ie cooker, washing machine, dishwasher, so we had to guess what setting did what. Ironically the only instructions we could find were for the toaster, which is the one appliance for which you could do without instructions. Also, there were no black bags to be found for leaving the bedding and towels in at the end of the stay as requested, so we folded these and left them on the bed; on day one we had to buy our own roll of kitchen towel as was none although there was a holder for the same; the one small thin square of J-cloth issued for the week was not helpful; the two dishwasher tablets supplied were never going to last a week so we bought some of those too. These are all relatively small and easily rectified issues which if addressed would make the apartment five stars rather than four. Generally, a very good week was had, thank you.
