What our customers say about their holidays

This UK staycation was an absolute hidden gem that we are so pleased we stumbled across on Sykes.
The photographs of the location and decor do this property absolute justice and the detail put in by the owners for our stay was on point. Very clean, well laid out living and bedroom areas, great modern touches like the electronic Vellux blinds/windows upstairs, and all kitchen appliances, cleaning and cooking materials you think youâd need. We could quite possibly turn up and still have all we needed for our trip which made the stay more comfortable the moment we arrived. We arrived to the barn set up with twinkle lights on the beams and a perfectly decorated Christmas tree to top off the decor for our winter visit in November/December. We recommend definitely booking a long visit here and to take advantage of the local places to visit like Thursk, Ripon Abbey National trust, York, Leeds and some other local treasures. 2 large supermarkets about a 15 minute drive away, and with full kitchen amenities you didnât even need to leave the barn and often enjoyed a lock in playing board games, enjoying the log fire and the hot tub (great outside space especially if you are a bird, aeroplane or star watcher as the sky was so clear!) We visited a dog friendly pub called The Black Horse, Kirklington, for a Sunday Roast and to watch some sport. The owners were so friendly and the meal was so good we went back again later in the week for their midweek set menu. The Pub dog Lenny was a charmer and made each guest feel special the minute they walked through the door. We would definitely recommend you to bring a vehicle to get about to neighbouring villages (there is also electric vehicle charging available) but the local walks with the dog were just beautiful. Not even a negative to say apart from we kept the curtains closed to have more privacy from the courtyard in between the other properties on site and suggest a larger TV screen to fill the ample space in the living area. We are looking out for available dates for us to book to come back as it was the most relaxing birthday station we have had since we started using Sykes Holidays. Thank you very much for an amazing stay!

We, like others, loved the cottage- a beautifully converted stone barn set with a lovely sun trap front garden & a well planted mature back garden both are securely surrounded with wooden fence & hedging along with cattle wire fencing.
Our two Labradors loved it, room to run around & secure. As others mentioned- yes the metal gates (4 in total) are of a wider gap design- 100mm/4â between bars so owners of smaller dogs would need to monitor at all times! Quality of fittings is great - particularly the bathroom & kitchen as well as the bedrooms. Everything youâll need is there, they even swapped the Prosecco for white wine in the welcome package as we donât drink fizzy! Bath was, shower was spot on & a great Bluetooth HIB mirror in there too to allow you to play music off your phone should you want. Our only negative was the height of the tv in the lounge - itâs set too high up on the wall in a smallish room with a chesterfield type of settee so you end up looking up with no neck support- we found this very uncomfortable! Had it been on the side unit it would have been fine & we found that if we had been a party of 4 it would have been a little tight in the lounge together if all adults. But the rest of the cottage is more than capable of catering for four. Beware the very muddy track up & around to Gormire lake, great once you get there but the fields tend to hold the rain along the tracks - wellies are a must as itâs VERY muddy as the guide on the kitchen notice board says. The Wi-Fi issues stated in other reviews seems to have been sorted- we had adequate service throughout although conflicting info on notice board to connect- one said âThe Old Dairyâ for the network & âDAIRYâ and *** as the password Another was same network with moonstone as password! We found the only network was âDAIRYâ & password to be âDairyâ plus the last bit stated

Just wow! We loved this cottage so much that we booked our next visit on our departure date!
We travelled from the South West with our dog to visit Yorkshire for 4 nights and this was the perfect location to explore surrounding areas. We arrived in the dark to find the cottage was decorated with a lit Christmas tree and garlands on the fireplace which made it feel super festive. The cottage was extremely clean and modern whilst giving it a countryside feel with the decor which is exactly what we wanted for our accommodation. It felt like home from home. We were delighted to find prosecco, mince pies and fresh flowers on our arrival which was a lovely added touch. The beds we very comfortable and we enjoyed sitting by the fire of an evening whilst playing card games and watching movies under a blanket. On our last night we enjoyed a bubble bath to relax with a glass of wine. The bathroom was always lovely and warm too! Our dog absolutely loved the big enclosed garden we were never worried about letting him out. It was so nice to see the farm animals as we left or came back to the cottage along the long driveway. We even saw an owl sat on the fence which we don't get to see where we live. The area was very peaceful, no disturbances and super dark at night due to no light pollution. It was only a 10 minute drive from Thirsk Town where they had supermarkets and local shops. During our week we visited Helmsley, The White Horse at Sutton Bank and on our last day we drove an hour to Whitby. We wished we stayed longer to explore more. We will 100% be back again, it's the best accommodation we have stayed in and we love Yorkshire, everyone is so friendly and approachable.

We always try to book holiday cottages that feel a little bit special, and the Old Dairy was by far our favourite to date.
Beautifully renovated with thoughtful design choices and quality fixtures. The Bluetooth mirror in the bathroom was fun! It was also spotlessly clean and little touches like Prosecco and fresh eggs were greatly appreciated. The cottage is so warm and cosy. I think really well insulated and with very effective heating. We also loved using the log burner. Our doggo loved the fully enclosed, very private back garden, which was perfectly maintained and had amazing views. If you have a very little dog there may be one spot it could escape, but Iâm sure the owners would be quick to offer a temporary solution if requested. On the rare dry mornings we had, we put our coats on and drank our coffees outside just to soak it all in. So peaceful. The location was great too. There are some lovely walks through fields and woodland right on the doorstep. You can even walk all the way to Gormire Lake which I really recommend. Could be very muddy though if itâs been raining for a week so bring good walking boots! Youâre also only 40mins - an hour away from York, Harrogate, Whitby (and all the other pretty east coast towns/villages), and walks in the moors. All very doable and scenic drives. Iâd also recommend visiting Helmsley. Only 20 mins away and so so pretty. Lots of pubs/cafes and little shops to mooch around. Donât hesitate to book the Old Dairy - or either of the other two cottages on site! You wonât regret it!

As fairly experienced holiday cottage bookers, we know the drill is to leave it as you find it.
But this was very difficult with the Old Dairy as everything was simply perfect! The fresh flowers, tea and biscuits and cute jug of milk plus bottle of Prosecco on arrival was just lovely, thank you. The luxury bath and gorgeous fire were our favourite parts. Everything was immaculately clean and tidy and everything you could have needed was available for use. The garden(s) were beautiful- perhaps the only minor I could mention was that our 2 mini sausages were able to escape through the metal fence at the back, but thatâs only because theyâre too nosey! And we blocked it off so they couldnât get out. Any dog bigger than a sausage would not have this issue and it is completely secure other than this. It was very quiet and peaceful with walks from the door, plus the many little towns and villages within a half hour / 40 minute drive were lovely. Highly recommend the local national park. We had some lovely views with our walks on the Cleveland Way. Owners did not bother us at all, but had left their number in case we needed them. We didnât because everything was spot on. Have already recommended this to our friends who will book it for later this year! If you are contemplating booking this cottage, just do it, you will not be disappointed and I would honestly give it 5 big fat stars
